apparently 5 fights have had this moniker attached to it! Which fight deserves this title? Rank them in the order of your choice

    1 Gans vs Nelson
    2 Johnson vs Jeffries
    3 Dempsey vs Carpentier
    4 Frazier vs Ali
    5 Mayweather vs Pacquaio

The one that would have made the general forum go most mental is Johnson-Jeffries.

I am kind of leaning towards the original Gans vs Nelson

    With
    Johnson vs Jeffries
    Frazier vs Ali
    Mayweather vs Pac
    Dempsey vs Carpentier

    Making the top 5

For some reason I thought Louis vs Schmeling was also called that? Or was it only used upon hindsight?

    For me, in order
    Gans Vs Nelson
    Frazier Vs Ali
    Dempsey Vs Carpentier
    Johnson Vs Jeffries

Though in terms of historical significance, Johnson Vs Jeffries is obviously No. 1

I'm not sure where Mayweather Vs Pacquiao fits in, since it was a different century, I don't tend to count it in that group. Probably last, as it was a crap fight, that happened too late, and not as historically significant as Johnson Vs Jeffries, though IMO more historically significant than Dempsey Vs Carpentier, at least that was a fun fight.

In terms of historical significance, and not the actual fight, it's much closer for me, in order maybe
    Johnson Vs Jeffries
    Frazier Vs Ali
    Mayweather Vs Pacquiao
    Gans Vs Nelson
    Dempsey Vs Carpentier

Numbers 1,2 and 4 all have a legitimate claim.

Number 5 should not be anywhere close to that list. By the time that fight happened, it was almost as much of a farce as Mayweather-McGregor.

Pac trying to fight Mayweather was always going to be a farce. To me the cards were as close as they would ever be....but I agree it shouldn’t really be on the list, and it should not be on a list of this century either

Is Johnson-Jeffries obviously no. 1? What would you say makes that the standout? Just interested, not saying I strongly disagree.

Frazier v Ali for me, two undefeated heavyweight champions, a unique situation until Wilder got his gift decision against Fury.

    The answer is Frazier-Ali.

Also, Mayweather-Pacquiao took place in a different century than all the others ... by 15 years. (LOL)

Two fights from different centuries could both be the fight of the century, since they represent different centuries.

The first four took place in the 20th century. The last took place in the 21st century.

Just so much politics around it, in people not wanting a black champion, and wanting to put Johnson in his place, then failing epically. I could maybe explain this better if I wasn't drunk AF.
