The "REAL" Reason Oscar De La Hoya Was Loved...

Dont even let me get started about DLH not backing out of a fight.......

The fact of the matter is that DLH backed out the the two biggest fights of his career......both would have been legacy difference makers......

.....a rematch with Tito, and an immediate rematch of DLH's Welterweight fight with Shane Mosely.
Both of those fights would have been at Welter, which is likely DLH's best weight in his career.


......please my friend, dont bring us this weak stuff that Tito and Mosely overpriced themselves.......stick that argument where it belongs (in a cage fuill of animal manure)
The facts are that someone of the media stature of DLH could have had any fight, anywhere and at anytime.....and DLH failed to make the two fights in his career that would have been huge at both the box office and for his legacy.

For DLH, it was the money first......and if his legacy benifited over it, it would only be icing on the cake.

The good think for DLH is that he will have his pockets lined with money for the rest of his life.......the downside is that his legacy will suffer for it......


30 years down the line when the name DLH comes up during conversation or oldtime boxing fans.......the word HYPE will be used with regularity.

With time, people tend to focus more on the reality.

 

I'll give you that it is a factor. He was a great fighter that lost quite a few big fights but it is the looks, the charm, the story, and as someone else mentioned he is very articulate.

Though I do get what you are saying, I think part of the reason Favre is so loved is that he does have alot of flaws on the field and off, but on his best day no one in the history of the game could touch him. So the same could be said for Oscar.

What was so Charming about him? Was it his smile, because is certainly was'nt his ability to communicate in speech form.

DLH is'nt even good with words, he stinks at it actually, so its a bit suprising to me that the media actually took to him.



My opinion on the reason for the HYPE......Olympic Gold Medalist who won it for his deceased mother.....and the media gravitated to the story......but from there, DLH's actual boxing career lacked the substance of a real ATG.

....he was popular because of his pre proffesional backround and good looks.......if not for his good looks, he would have been just an exellent fighter nowhere near a PPV seller.

And as for Trinidad, it is well known that Tito moved up in weight immediately after DLH, with the EXCUSE that he couldn't make weight anymore.

And if you think there is any fighter who fights out of mere glory and not MONEY first, you have to be a complete moron.

Every move, every step, and everything a fighter says is calculated to bring more dollars into his pocket FIRST.

Nobody ever claimed any of those fighters were articulate or even charming........but I'll tell you one thing, DLH is far from articulate......

......but he's not articulate and he's not even a decent communicator......I even read an article not long ago from someone stating that it was embarassing trying to sit there and watch DLH go to a podium and speak to promote a fight.....he is'nt really a good promoter....he owns a promotional Co. but he himself is a lousy promoter........

......quite simply, he's not articulate, he's not a good speaker, and the charm part of it can only be attributed to his cheapish smile!

nah...they loved him long before he ever lost...he was super hyped from day 1 after his gold medal and super pushed being on network tv every fght he had until he was showcased on undercard PPVs to headlining OVER james toney when Toney had accomplished far more and made it a point to point it out that night that he shouldnt have been undercard....

Bob Arum did some masterful promoting and matchmaking to make Oscar what he is. Oscar held up his end nicely by handling his business in the ring.

 

Grow the **** up~ Oscar is loved for several reasons, his personal story regarding his mother, the man when he turned pro has never ducked a single challenge, has put the biggest money fights together for the sport.

Created a much higher pay standard for the smaller fighters and paved the way for guys like Mayweather Jr and Pacquiao to take his place when he is gone.

 

Many people here don't realize just how skilled oscar de la hoya was in his prime. Maybe the best "technical" boxer of the 1990s with his oustanding skills, Jab, and fluid combinations. At lighthweight he was a monster, he cleaned out the division and no one came close to beating him. His power and punching skills at lightweight were devastating making him a Dangerous boxerpuncher at 135lb. at 140lb he took apart undefeated Miguel Angel Gonzalez, and I have no doubt he would have stopped Kosta Tszyu at 140lb too. Lets remember just how good oscar was in his PRIME.
