It's very simple: He knows very well that he is slipping.
After the Lacy fight he wanted the big fights because he thought that he is still in his prime but he knows well after his performance against Hopkins that he is a faded fighter - his punches don't have zip at all anymore and he gets hit cleanly more than in the past. He is ready to be taken by a younger elite fighter, and I learned from his post fight interviews that he lost some of his famous self confidence.

He doesn't want to fight anymore a very good fighter in his prime like pavlik, and I can understand him: I pick pavlik to beat this version of Calzaghe although in my opinion he barely wins one round against a prime Calzaghe. Why risk an 18 years old undefeated legacy when you are old and you can get more money with less risk ? he already beat Kessler, who is a bigger threat than Pavlik at 168, and he can't even get a new belt from fighting Kelly Pavlik.

Calzaghe deserves to get a nice payday at the end of his career and he earned the right not to take the toughest opponent available in his last fight when he is old but he's such an arrogant *******, if he would have stated the reasons mentioned above to the public instead of saying Pavlik is too green for him I think no one would have complained.

i agree but i think the JC now would still win against pavlik but he would get hit to often and put down atleast once but would win it on a UD but it would be a huge risk but i think he should take that risk..

If he loses then people will just scream he was a hype job and vastly over rated but you have to think that he is not in his prime anymore and no spring chicken

Amazes me that someone who has been registered here for two years would make such a naive statement.

I meant no one with half a brain. I don't give a **** what haters of specific fighters say. I respect all fighters and don't hate anyone of them - They are all much braver than us bad mouthing forum members...

It's very simple: He knows very well that he is slipping.
He is coming off the most significant win in his career and in the states.

After the Lacy fight he wanted the big fights because he thought that he is still in his prime but he knows well after his performance against Hopkins that he is a faded fighter - his punches don't have zip at all anymore and he gets hit cleanly more than in the past.
Joe Calzaghe performed as well as Hopkins allowed him too, and Pavlik wouldn't have done all that much better against such an awkward opponent.

He is ready to be taken by a younger elite fighter, and I learned from his post fight interviews that he lost some of his famous self confidence.
I wouldn't have such a problem taking this seriously if Joe hadn't been written off before his last fights everytime. Joe would thoroughly outbox Pavlik just like he did against every other young prime opponent that you picked to beat him. And even if he didn't win, there is no shame in losing at the highest level.

He doesn't want to fight anymore a very good fighter in his prime like pavlik, and I can understand him: I pick pavlik to beat this version of Calzaghe although in my opinion he barely wins one round against a prime Calzaghe.
I think this version of Joe Calzaghe is the best that we have ever seen. When he was younger, he wasn't able to show how good he was because he wasn't fighting quality opposition. He deserved the victory against Hopkins, who was coming off wins over Tarver and Winky Wright, and that is to Calzaghe's credit. Your perspective is disjointed.

Why risk an 18 years old undefeated legacy when you are old and you can get more money with less risk ?
Because unlike Floyd Mayweathr Jr, the most important thing to Joe is how he will be remembered in 20 years time. If Joe takes the fight with Jones, and it isn't confirmed, then he will have time to fight Pavlik after. he already beat Kessler, who is a bigger threat than Pavlik at 168, and he can't even get a new belt from fighting Kelly Pavlik.
Kelly Pavlik stock rose when he defeated Gary Lockett.

He hasn't stated those reasons for his decision because they aren't his reasons. Joe Calzaghe has been undefeated throughout his career, and now he calls the shots, not little boxing fans on the internet. You're all ruling out him fighting Pavlik so that you have another reason to discredit him because of his passport, and quite frankly I'm sick of these stupid dumb ass threads. Stop being idiots...all of you.

And I'd love to take your advice but I'd fear it wouldn't help because I seem to see your bull**** input in every thread.

One more reason I forgot: Calzaghe knows that Pavlik isn't Hopkins: he is a loved guy, the face and future of HBO for years to come. Therefore, no way Calzaghe gets the decision in the states unless he wins 8 rounds clearly, which based on his last fight I don't think he can do anymore against a tireless active fighter like Pavlik.
