I agree. I believe that Calzaghe really wanted to fight Pavlik before the Hopkins fight, he knew that he is a better fighter than Pavlik, but Calzaghe understood after the fight that his skills are faded now and that it's better for him to fight someone from his own generation.
I don't think the Lockett fight matters, he's not a world class fighter. The fact that Calzaghe didn't come to watch tells you that he decided to go for Jones before the Pavlik fight.

If you can tell me what fight Hopkins has been in ,(with the exception of the Tarver fight) which one of them was not ugly ?But I personally feel the win over Hopkins was monimental .I give him all the respect for coming here and winning ..If Jones does beat him and they turn on him then shame on them !!

I don't suscribe to the new way of thinking these days where if a fighter loses he autoatically is shot or sucks ..I respect what they have done and if they lose well what can you do they all lose eventually..

Did you see the posts a while back about RJJ talking about this? A couple of losses in MMA means ****. Yet people on this board want to pretend MMA fans a dumb?

Yep, and I would not have LIKED him picking Jones for his next fight but it would have gone down a lot better if he hadn't run his mouth about how he would out class Kelly and it was KELLY that didn't want the fight. Respect lost on this one.

Any one with the audacity to think a guy with a 34-0 30KO record could beat a fighter that called him out.. Yep...:nut

Kelly Pavlik only became a great fighter after his dominating victory over Gary Lockett.

Good post ... it is likely perfectly correct that Joe wants to protect that zero more than anything else as he is so close to the end and still has it ... of course that desire will affect his choice of opponents .. what is best for Joe is what is 'safest' ... Hop only wants 35+ year-old opponents, RJJ is looking for the same which is why he's looking at Joe now (what better than a punchless opponent too?), Joe was only looking at Pavlik because he was a MW and thought that would be safer .. but a firsthand look changed that idea ... at 34ish RJJ fought for the heavyweight title .. at 35 Joe is looking for the 40 year old RJJ ...

RJJ, Hopkins, Toney, Tarver, etc. = elite talent

    Joe C = second tier
    Kessler = third tier

Lots of fights out there that will expose Joe's (current) limitations ... Dawson, Johnson, George, Tarver, Pavlik, and RJJ

Basically all American figters are elite and any American fighter could expose JC! Is this the point you really trying to make?

It's a well known fact that any semi-competent American could stroll through Calzaghe's pitter-patter slaps and knock him out.

Only a handful of American boxers could not do this, it just so happens that that very short list includes Bernard Hopkins, Jeff Lacy, Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell, Omar Sheika.....

I disagree, Calzaghe is an elite talent. He has more talent than Tarver and is on par with James Toney. I agree he is a notch below Hopkins and Jones but you are taliking about the two best fighters in the last 20 years.
Calzaghe, even today, beats George easily and outpoints Johnson and Tarver in close fights. Yet I pick Pavlik and Dawson to outpoint him because like I said, Calzaghe is faded and they are in their primes.

Still don't know who 'George' is?

George Foreman? George Formby? George Harrison?

For a couple of seconds I thought it may refer to Shaun George but then realised how ridiculous a thought that was....

No way .. we have lots of lousy fighters .. real fighters get in the ring and get tested as young men .. they don't fight one decent fading fighter who gets two weeks notice to lose an extra seven pounds and then nobody for a decade ...

Beyond that .. currently, there are a lot of fighters who are likely to handle or KO Joe because he was always overrated and it is especially clear by watching him fight Grandpa Hopkins .. no way that ability stays undefeated without some very careful matchmaking and/or spending nearly an entire career fighting Euro bums ... Joe would have four or five losses easy if he had plied his trade over here ....

Shaun George would destroy Joe if they fought tonight, tomorrow night, or last week .. easy fight to predict .. George is WAY TOO STRONG and ATHLETIC for Paulie Calzaghe.
