Many have said that Cotto did not institute his patented body attack, which I agree with.
He hardly went to the body at all.

Has anyone thought that the reason may be because Margarito gave him his jaw all night long and Cotto went after it trying to get the knockout?

Didn't work out for him though.

Yes and Cotto felt every body shot margo hit him with.

Don't forget margo got long arms and defends his body well with his elbows.

Exactly. I was telling my father that Margarito gave Cotto the right side of his face to hit all night in lieu of the body. He had that elbow tucked in for that whole fight. Had he kept his guard up I feel that Cotto would have broken him down downstairs over time. Crazy but brilliant strategy by Margarito IMO. Gotta have some ****in whiskers to implement that strategy.

what about the jab to the body though? He could've used that at least.

yeah this is a interesting one.

cotto virtually abandoned body shots. :huh

it was all whipped in head shots really.

certainly floyd would have been whipping some in downstairs on margo. :bbb

Margos defense is so leaky and he's so open it allows him to just be hit freely. Add in Margo has a great chin. Cotto headhunted and I think it broke him when Margo just walked through those shots.

I think it's because Cotto thought he would be able to outbox Margarito for 12 rounds the way he was doing so during the first half of the fight. His team didn't think he needed to break Margarito down a lot to beat him, they probably thought Cotto could simply use a defensive style to beat him and win a decision. Bad mistake, especially since Cotto has never used a strategy like that before and changing his style for one fight was risky. They didn't expect Cotto to break down the way he did from Margarito's pressure (and the constant movement around the ring IMO) and not have the endurance left to survive. It would be very interesting to see how Cotto would fight in the rematch and how Cotto reacts to his first loss.

Cotto was concerned about getting a left hook to the body in return. that's why he threw so many power shots.

“Miguel Cotto fought a great fight—a perfect fight. Anyone else he fights, he wears down, but this guy, he’s an express train. It’s as simple as that.”
Bob Arum... And that is exatcly why Cotto didn't go to the body... Actually, Margarito goes to the body perfectly with his left tight to his body. From the last minute of the opening round, Tony had Cotto leaning back to the ropes with no room and leverage to volley punch to the body. And Miguel needs that precious space to break through to the middle section. I knew Cotto would be the first to take a step back, I'm sorry.

That's what i thought happened as well. Also, i felt Cotto could've mixed it up by fighting inside from time to time then start boxing again but of course that would've been very risky. The reason i say that is because Marg was not gonna stop coming forward and keep putting the pressure on him. With Cotto's shots not doing anything to him i'd figure Cotto would've made certain adjustments. But what do i know
i've never been in the ring with Marg :D

He was getting hit with te left hook anyway so he should've just stuck to his bread in butter. Body work

Exactly. Prettyy simple really, he didn't throw to the body because he'd have to be inside to get there, and he had no desire to be on the inside with Margarito. He was sticking and moving, and wasn't willing to stand and trade with Tony last night.

Cotto breaks down his opponents by applying pressure and digging to the body. If he had taken that route he would have been taken out a lot earlier. Margarito is just to big and strong stand and trade with him. He had the right game plan to beat Margarito (probably the only way to beat him)...but that's easier said than done against a beast like margarito who keeps coming forward and throwing volume punches. Margarito is not going to be broken down (if he can be broken) by moving and trying to box him and its tough to go to the body when you are moving and trying to stay away from your opponent.
