I'm not Calzaghes biggest fan, in fact i think he's an arrogant ***** but what he is saying makes a lot of sense to me.
Dawson could be a Massive draw in a year or two, A Hopkins rematch is no good for anyone and Pavlik lost momentum with the domination by Hopkins, leaving no Superfights out there for Calzaghe to take. I respect the fact that he has called it a day and is not gonna fight "3 Bums" to get Marciano's record, Fair play Joe, happy retirement.

Yes, I can. Calzaghe has a split decision against a man who is actively campaigning to fight him again and just came off a huge victory.

A clearer win does wonders for him.

Sure, good for him, retiring on top and all, but you cannot tell me there is little to be gained from a rematch with Hopkins, against whom he has only a narrow Split Decision victory.

If Joe had picked up a loss in his career I doubt he would be retiring now. He is not far off the peak of his powers, imho.

Ok so say in June 2009 he fought Hop and won a clear 116-12 decision.

You honestly telling me he will get absoloute credit? No-one would say it was purely down to Hop being a year older. Or any thing else.

I'd love to believe you, but i dont.

I agree if he had a loss his whole career could have been different.

Wouldnt say he was close to peak powers tho. I must be alone in what i saw in the Jones fight. Wasnt impressed at all.

If Pavlik had beat Hopkins, Joe would have to fight him, or go out on a really sour note after all the **** he talked. However, Pavlik lost damn near every round, and that left Joe in the clear.

He's smart to get out while he still has his wits about him. Take one look at Roy Jones, and anyone can see that point.

Bottom line, there's nothing left for him. He wants a big cash fight that also gives him credit, there isn't one.
Pavlik would have been ideal, pity.

    No he can't sadly.

Not after going to an SD with the legend and after the legend just beat Kelly Pavlik.

    Ridiculous is'nt it?

He shoud give Hopkin's a rematch, considering how close the first fight was and how Hopkins just beat Pavlik.

He does'nt fancy risking his 0 against the old man though does he? ;)

Joe Beat Hopkins before the Pavlik fight.

Why should the result of Hop-Pavlik affect things; you think Hopkins will use that tactic against Joe in a second fight, with Joe just walking about after Hopkins throwing single shots and getting pinged by counters. **** off!

The Pavlik result just makes Joe's win over Hopkins look even better.

I think people are mad not to want to see a rematch after the way he just beat Pavlik.

Hopkins made a statement that night and Calzaghe does'nt want to know.

This is one of the reason's his career will be picked aprt time and time again over the years.

A true champion would fight Hopkin's again.

He doesnt believe he can beat him though the second time.

Oh and i don't care about the style's make fight's argument regarding Hopkins vs Pavlik.

The way hopkins just beat a fighter with the credentials of Pavlik was special. :deal

He called Joe out with that win withouy even opening his own mouth. Calzaghe retired.

A rematch with Hopkins at the Millenium Stadium on SKY Box Office PPV would have brought in some big numbers' for both fighter's too.

Again, especially after the way Hopkins just dealt with Pavlik.

Indeed, Marnoff. Calzaghe ran away from Hopkins.

This undefeated record stuff has had a negative influence on Calzaghe's choices.

No point in any of us theorizing if Calzaghe could have won the rematch. His actions make it abundantly clear he didn't like his chances. Frankly, I have to agree. I saw the first fight. Hopkins increases his output only measurably, and it's a massacre.
