Former heavyweight champ Roy Jones Jr. is the latest boxer to take a pounding from the IRS. After it was recently revealed that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was hit with a past due tax bill of nearly $3.4 million, former four division champion Roy Jones Jr. has been hit with an even bigger bill for $3.5 million dollars. Robert Snell of The Detroit News reports that the IRS filed a $629,085 lien against Jones on March 21 with the Santa Rosa County Clerk in Florida. Those taxes are owed from 2009, but there is also another lien, which was filed on February 11, 2008 for $2,946,650 in Santa Rosa County. That bill is for Jones' earnings in 2003 and 2004. Jones returns on May 22 in Moscow against dangerous cruiserweight Denis Lebedev. :-(
Sad to see. My hero as a kid. I remember this photo and thinking ''someday i wanna be like him...all them belts around me''. It hurts seeing him get beaten by guys he'd destroy....the Green fight really riles me. This content is protected
Interviewer to Larry Holmes "How would you like to be remembered Larry?" "As a heavweight champio who looked after his money" I recall in the build up to Calzaghe and Jones, Roy arrived in New York in his own private jet. If he owed that money and then continued to live like that its just ridiculous and a grown man with a family should know better
Sad stuff. It makes it worse that Roy seemed like a smart guy who you'd think wouldn't have these problems. It's hard to have sympathy for someone who made such vast amounts of money and is just so complacent with it though. This is a guy who had basketball courts in his house...:nut How hard is it to pay off you're taxes or at least pay someone a little to do it for you. How hard is it to just put a couple of mill in a money market account?
This. Boxers seem to struggle with their taxes more than most celebs..... with the possible exception of Wesley Snipes.
It's pretty baffling you can be making 10's of millions for one fight and not put away 3 or 4 mill in an account somewhere. I mean yeah, you can **** away the rest all ya want but you've got that safeguard. Moronic.
whats all this past due tax and **** , if he earned 10 million in 2002 then take the amount he owes in tax early 2003 or whatever , whats with pulling him up on it 7 years late
:deal Maybe it's coming from a poor council estate background, but I always make sure that everything I owe is paid and refuse to have a credit card...
You would have thought someone that comes across as clever as Roy, would have employed an accountant as soon as the chips started rolling in. Maybe he was so arrogant he thought the normal tax laws dont apply to him. Now he will end up paying far more tax, than if he had employed an accountant!!!atschWith his reflexes gone and his chin marked fragile, this is not looking a good end.
I agree with this. ****ing pisses me off seeing boxers that have earned millions struggling to pay their taxes years later when there are people that earn much less and manage to sort their lifes out fine. I have the utmost respect for him as a fighter but as a person what a ****ing idiot.
