Athletes use PED's more to recover from workouts and go through them again sooner than their body would normally let them.
Its not just about muscle recovery, its about cardio-recovery and stamina.

Read an article once where a former baseball player who just had a short stint in the Major Leagues talked about what PED's did for him.
He said, without the PED's he would not have been good enough to break through a major league roster.
It didn't help him just with strenghth it helped him with speed drills and even hand eye coordination.
This particular baseball player said that when he was at bat, he was able to pickup the ball and react to it so much faster when he was using performance enhancing drugs.
He was able to run his bat faster through the strike zone and catch up to fast***** that were closing in on 100 mph, where otherwise he wouldn't have taken his bat off his shoulder.

If anyone here watched Barry Bonds when he was roided up and on his tear, there wasn't a pitcher in the league that could get a fastball by him, when just before he started taking PED's he was having diffulty catching up to just a low 90 miles per hour fastball.

My point is that PED's are not just used to bulk up.
