Boxing trainer and ESPN boxing analyst Teddy Atlas continues to show his obvious jealousy of Freddie Roach and hatred of Pacquiao; trainer Freddie Roachs success has left Teddy as a wannabe and an also-ran trainer. There were rumors that Atlas was rejected by Pacquiao as a trainer and chose Freddie Roach instead. If that was the case, I can see where Atlas would become a little bitter and venomous towards Pacquiao and Roach. It seems that Atlas goes out of his way just to derail the success of the dynamic duo at every chance he gets. Atlas said on ESPN that he would not place Pacquiao in the top 20 of all time greatest fighters and ranks Floyd Mayweather ahead of Pacquiao. Look at the body language of the other broadcasters while Atlas is talking. They were just disgusted at the absurdity of what he was saying. Atlas also countered his co-host that Sugar Ray Leonard would stop Manny Pacquiao. Once again, check out the body language of the others, they look incredulous at Atlas statements.
Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao have been together since early 2001. Roach took him in when all other trainers told Pac that Filipino boxers were unmarketable in the U.S. From my understanding, Atlas offered to train Pacquiao for his fight with Jorge Solis when Freddie Roach trained Oscar De La Hoya to fight Floyd back in 2007. Pac declined the offer and chose Freddie's assistant at the time Justln Fortune instead. Funny how all of Teddy's hate on Pac emerges from that point on.
Well lets analyse that for a minute A) Is Manny Pacquiao ATG top 20 - For most classic fans - ie - Older than 40 - that's a resounding no so far, and if so, just into the top 20. Not really a bitterness or a hate issue there. B) Ranking Mayweather over Pac ATG - I think that's the weakest of the three arguments, but it's not like Floyd did NOTHING, Manny overall I personally would place higher, everyone's list is subjective so whatever. C) I also think Leonard would stop Pacquiao at welterweight. That's not really a rub when Ray is a top ATG Welterweight. I think Teddy is more just not a fan of ANY modern fighter being ranked over a sport with over a centuries worth of history. He was a Cus D'matto product and look at the respect and love for boxing history he instilled into Mike Tyson - it makes sense that Teddy is protective of the legacies of the old timers.
Criticism and hate are two different things. When you're at the top, you need to be able to deal with a measure of both critique and praise.
Atlas is a good commentator and very knowledgable of the sweet science whatever happened to that ****** Fortune guy?
Unless I'm deaf, I don't hear any praise from Atlas on Pac. That's when constant critique is questioned and sometimes mistaken for hatred.
Think he has his own gym somewhere in southern California. From what I have gathered he is great with physical condition but not very knowledgeable on the technical aspects of the sport. And Pac probably makes the top 20 of all-time but not much higher. People who say he is a top 10 all time great are delirious and forget all of the great fighters...who fought the the best during their time (not that Pac doesn't want to...it's just the way the sport is now-a-days...unfortunately).
yet, an article on yahoo says Atlas' comments are justified. were they denied the opportunity to train pac as well?
..........atlas ,same guy that has predicted a wlad loss in 10 of his last 11 fights ! He is a joke!!!Al Bernstein has more class in the tip of his knob than Teddy Atlas could ever hope for .
