It just occurred to me that we've gone off on a tangent about the HEAVYWEIGHT division in a JAPANESE BOXING thread. That's pretty damn funny..

I know it's not boxing (MMA? Boo! Hiss! :cus) but on the same day that Ishida upset Kirkland, a living legend of Japanese Mixed Martial Arts scored a huge win in front of a sold-out crowd in San Diego and a national TV audience on Showtime. At close to even money, slight favorite Shinya Aoki beat a top rising lightweight prospect named Lyle Beerbohm (whose only previous loss had been a highly disputed decision to a cagey cage veteran) via brutal neck crank in 90 seconds flat. It was vintage stuff from Aoki, who is a much bigger star in his native country than Ishida. Overall, it was an excellent week in combat sports for the land of the rising sun to help rally their spirits. War Aoh! War Nishioka! War Ishida! War Aoki! ...hell, war Hasegawa who looked very classy as usual even in defeat! :happy
The next major card in Japan features intergalactic legend Koki Kameda, his little Mexican bro Tomoki Kameda and up and coming KO artit Masao Nakamura. It's being held in Osaka on May 7. Koki puts his "regular" WBA BW title on the line vs. Nicaragua's Daniel Diaz while Nakamura (12-0, 12KOs) defends the OPBF SFW belt against Ronal Pontillas from The Philippines. Tomoki faces TBA whom I heard a lot but yet to see him fight. Who is this TBA? How good is he?

A little correction, Ishida returns on the November 26 Canelo-Cintron card and is yet to have an opponent.
Koki Kameda won impressively while Daiki lost to Tepparith Kokietgym. Koki should make some sound at BW in 2012, he's got very good tools, grew into the division well, packs a punch in both hands but needs to loosen up a little, box on the move, use the crisp jab more often and mix punches up instead of putting power behind ones and one-twos. Now quite there with the best of 118lbs but there is room to improve and his timing looked better than before. Look forward to his next year. Tomoki Kameda also won but he's a little too green to be considered for big bouts, needs a year or two.
