The respect Fernando Montiel Thread.

Tend to agree. I doubt Montiel is feeling too sorry for himself, he knows its a dangerous sport (Alcazar unfortunately perished at his hands).

To be fair, most posts in this thread are respect posts; some for getting up from the punch and some for his career in general.

The loss to Nonito doesn't drop his stock in my eyes. He's an excellent fighter.

 

seeing him get up like that, it was like he was demanding his body to get up when it just didnt want to, make you check your shorts to see if you really got balls!

 

the last thing i want is get patronized.

 

I still can't believe he got up from that shot. Nobody could've blamed him for waiting it out, taking the ten count, and getting immediate help...but the dude's such a natural fighter that he still got up and refused to just lay down despite the obvious devastating effect of that hook. Some may view it as patronizing, and who knows, maybe it is, but that deserves some f'n respect in my book.

 

I think it's pretty cool that he lived up to his word in the pre-fight hype. He said that if he got knocked down he'd get back up and he'd expect Nonito to do the same. When the knockdown happened it wasn't a normal stunning knockdown, it was a skull pulverizing KO shot....and he got up. Incredible.

 

Montiel is a great fighter he just ran into a greater one. He has nothing to be ashamed of.

 

I wouldn't call this a ''sympathy'' thread. I think it was neccessary. In amongst all the clamour around Donaire, almost nobody has stopped to think ''wow, Montiel is a damn good fighter.'' I wont give him sympathy, this is boxing, this stuff happens, and I'm sure he doesn't want any sympathy either. What I will give him though is my utmost respect, I've been watching this guy for years now, and I knew he was a real fighter, an absolute warrior, before he somehow got up from that shot.

The fact he got up from that shot tells you all you need to know about Montiel. True warrior, looking forward to seeing him back in the ring. Being second best to a special fighter like Donaire is nothing to be ashamed of

 

Montiel is one of the best fighters to come out of Mexico in the last decade. Great fighter, and one performance doesnt change what he already accomplished. I suspect his career is reaching the end and I do think that he is winding down despite his recent wins. Hes been doing this a very long time.
