Excuse me everyone but this is my first post...I was wondering if the school i picked for bjj is the correct one any input would be great. After years of wanting to take BJJ a school finally arrived in my town, I go into the intro class and after waiting for about two hours they finally asked me about my interest in the sport, level of experience, and I got the background of the school and instructors etc...I don't know much about about submissions and so forth but I've been involved in wrestling for around 10 yrs. I was finally asked if I wanted to spar, so I decided sure why not...now I've been out of wrestling and into being lazy for around 3 yrs. So needless to say I'm out of tip top shape, But i managed within the first two minutes to get 2 submissions on my opponent after that i was dog tired and he managed to get 3 submissions from me...I should mention my opponent was the instructor who outweighs me by at least 40 lbs. I beleive that with my wind back to what it was I could have beaten him easily or if he would have chosen someone closer to my weight, I would have destroyed them...Basically what I'm asking if any former (out of shape..lol) wrestlers had the same feeling when going to learn BJJ? If so did you stay witth the same class or switch to another where you feel there was more of a challenge? I should add that my former wrestling coach was a purple belt in BJJ so he taught the team alot of illegal submissions after our daily although mandatory workouts... Any input would be great
So you knew submissions or you didnt? Even all things considered you were wrestling without a gi and your instructor lost to you twice... Thats pretty bad if considered you've never gotten any formal training in submissions. My background was 3 years of wrestling and year and a half of BJJ when I started formal training. I rolled with the instructor(I outweight him by at least 50lbs) the first practice and needless to say he wooped my butt bad. I mean even though I've gotten top positions on him through wrestling background it took him less than a minute to pull something out. Didn't matter next practice with no gi. I still got whooped. The very first time I came to BJJ I kept getting choked out a lot. Took me sometime to get used to not giving up the back. Find a new school. If you can beat your instructer 2 our of 5 times while you're "out of shape" you'll waste money training there.
This does sound like **** if you head instructor is getting submitted by you **** you shouldnt be even getting any near submissions on his ass. Does he even have a Belt ? Mine is a Blackbelt under Renzo Gracie.
If you submitted your "instructor" twice coming in from the cold with no knowledge of submissions - then that school sounds like some old bull****. You shouldn't be able to touch the instructor - much less make it through the lower tier of blue belts on your first day.
LOL pet peeve of mind too. For the record its "small accomplishment let alone big accomplishment" not the other way around.
True, my instructor can kick my arse and so can many of the students, but that is good because they then can teach me something. Unless you are a top flight, mma fighter just looking for training partners ,you need good instruction otherwise you will just stay at a level.
I'm sorry, let ...Tyme explain I know a couple of submissions not many but, i managed to submit him with an akle lockle the first time and just used a saturday night the next time, he kept telling me to watch for the sweep, which I assumed was a reversal, which he never managed to get...now i'm not saying i'm cael sanderson in wrestling but, I can put your ass on the mat and make you feel like you're in for a match at least. What I'm asking for...Have any other wrestlers felt that you could take down and smother a practiotioner of BJJ...If we were able to use ground and pound, I'm sure he would've been KOed the second time he was down..ty all
Your bjj coach is a joke and should get his belt burnt. The only people that I dominated w/ my wrestling are other white belts and a couple of low blue belts that came from another school.
:deal I couldn't even do anything against blue belts. As fas as takedowns, you'll dominate anyone who never wrestled. Gi will take some time to get used as far as takedowns.
Exactly im curious about what kind of instructor this fella is. He sounds like a Whitebelt or a **** poor Blue. Its usually Browns and Blacks that are instructors or an occasional Purple who would let this guy teach ?
