Reading this months Ring ,I was struck by how much it has dumbed down over the last few years. Four pages of pics of round card girls, articles on what music boxers are listening to .Two full page adds that have nothing to do with boxing, one for a drill ,one for a Black berry. An article by Don Stradley, reviewing the new book on Joe Gans" The Longest Fight" in which he asserts Gans was the first Afro American world champion. Gans won the recognized lightweight title from Frank Erne on 12th May 1902. Joe Walcott won the welterweight title from Rube Ferns on the 18th of December 1901,and George Dixon won the bantamweight crown on Jun the 27th 1890. One new innovation I did like was an interview with a former fighter ,stating who was his best opponent in such fields as defence handspeed power etc. This month it was Shane Mosley. It' s becoming more of a comic in its format imo. Shame as I have suscribed for about 35 years.
I have to agree that this month's issue is the worst issue i've ever read. Also, I get it delivered. It arrived the Monday after Dawson-Ward - and included a long preview of that fight. Pathetic.
Incredible as it is to say, the next issue may not have a review of that fight. They are so far behind now it's just not funny. I know it doesn't really matter as the web is always going to beat them to the punch these days, but you'd think they make more of an effort.
I've noticed that problem as well when I've picked up their magazines. I think they're inevitably going to have to switch to a faster turn around time on their print version, (maybe something like slimmer volumes with reviews of past fights and previews of upcoming fights every 2 weeks, with occasional thicker "the year so far" volumes every 2 or 3 months) or they're going to have to largely junk the print copy and make the online version the primary one they focus on.
I haven't bought a boxing mag in years, but maybe the dumbing-down has to do with feeling the need to compete with MMA and that kind of thing. There's a lot of dumb to compete with there.
I have nothing against round card girls :hey But I agree that all things considered, TR has gone downhill
I like looking at women in the minimum of clothing as much as the next hetro, but I dislike paying for 4 pages of them in a boxing mag. And ,do you really care what music boxers are listening to?
I was aware the magazine had gone down hill in a big way, but when I saw the ring card girls I was almost digusted. That ****'s for NUTS and ZOO (awful British mags). You don't by a boxing mag to look at tits - and who the hell hasn't got an internet connection with a link to youjizz anyway?
