This is true...I'm sure the older posters on here remember the days when The Ring used to say proudly that "The Ring is a magazine that a man may take home with him and leave on his coffee table etc..."(or words to that effect). Anyone remember this? Mid you, on this side of the pond, Boxing News is also not nthe same as it used to be, very glossy and colourful, but not the same standard of writing as when the late, great Harry Mullan was editor... Style over substance seems to be the way these days...
Used ta have a column in BOXING NEWS, FH. As an American, unbelievable the hoops I hadda jump through ta get paid, plus, they sanitized the language, so as not to offend. God knows, fight fans have never heard curse words.
JG, thank you for replying. Wow,a column in BN? Excellent! Was this in the Harry Mullan days or prior - was Gilbert Odd the editor? You have me intrigued as to your identity now... I assume the payment issues were due to the antiquated international banking (pre-credit card) days - or were they just tight with money?
It was after Harry 'n Gilbert, FH. International banking, whatever; my landlord expects rent on time. For the paltry few bucks, it wasn't worth the headaches.
I thought it was an apt title , but I'm inclined to agree with you. I can remember the excitement I used to feel picking it up as a youngster and sitting on the bus , not reading it till I got home, now I seem to go through the motions scanning it.
I've long since stopped buying the Ring...and I looked so much forward to it each month...haunting the magazine store...buying KO magazine too...those days are over.
"Joe Walcott, (March 13, 1873 – October 1, 1935) also known as Barbados Joe Walcott to distinguish him from the American known by the same name, was born in Demerara, British Guyana on March 13, 1873."
"You're in the wrong thread c." On the first page of this thread someone said that both Joe Walcott and George Dixon were born in North America.
I use to collect the Ring magazine but its too far behind,by xmas time it will probably be only talking about the aftermath of Martinez and Chavez,Boxing Monthly is a far better magazine,i rememeber the days of the late 90s where i had to get my information about boxing from magazines..
