Thought the fight could have gone either way, but neither are on Ward/Kovalev's level. Cuadras and Chocolatito are p4p behind Kov/Ward
I had Gonzalez winning in a far clearer fashion than Ward, winning 8 rounds. I only really had him slowing down in the second half of the fight, a bit like Kovalev recently.
I actually think that Ward and Kovalev aew great fighters. And Kovalev in the eyes of almost everybody won that fight. No they're not the second coming of Duran or Ali. But they're exceptional fighters. Two very well schooled boxers.
No it wasn't. Nearly everyone had Gonzalez beating Cuadras. I'd say 75% at least had Kovalev beating Ward, at and of those 25% who had Ward winning virtually everyone was rooting for Ward in the 1st place. The main difference was also Gonzalez didn't take a bunch if tune-ups, he went straight in with the champ. And this was his 4th weight class he's won a world title in, not his 2nd.
Your username tells me that you will bend over backwards to make the African American pound for pound no.1 and likely bent over backwards to give Ward the win at weekend.
More so about his opponents. Even if you bent over backwards to give Ward the win is Kovalev beating Hopkins and Pascal really so much more impressive than Cuadras beating Concepcion and Sor Rungivasai? Didn't see Gonzalez taking 18 months of tune-ups against **** poor opponents before he jumped in there with him either.
I disagree, Ward fought and looked like an older fighter last weekend. Pound for pound isn't a popularity contest, it is a hypothetical opinion of who would come out on top if all boxers were the same weight. I can tell you right now, that Ward isn't pound for pound #1. As I stated previously, he wouldn't beat Rigondeaux or Lomachenko. I'll take it a step further and state that Kovalev probably destroys him in the rematch.
