There was a time when The Ring Magazine Championship was really gathering a following and prestige, to the point that it was conceivable that it might become the leading belt. Calzaghe is thought of as a two weight champion having held only The Ring belt at LH. Now it seems to have dropped back down to an honorary award. Why is this?
Due to the FACT that since Golden Boy purchased the magazine it is a total conflict of interest and a self serving piece of garbage now.I wouldn't use this rag for a door mat now.
I looked at the Ring Ratings yesterday and saw Miguel Cotto listed as champion. He may have the lineal belt after that farce against Martinez but he shouldn't be in the top ten at middleweight. That's just a sick joke. Plus, the Ring's ratings of fighters has been very biased since Oscar De La Hoya bought the magazine. You routinely see people moving into the top ten p4p based on nothing but hype.
X2 spot in points , although I think all p4p lists are a load of rubbish there is no specific criteria that can be used for ranking fighters
They put Roman Gonzalez at number nine in the p4p list after he beat a fighter with a 11-4-1 record and who can forget they having Broner at number five p4p when the biggest win on his record was De Marco, their rating are a joke and shouldnt be taken serious by anyone.
When GB bought the pubication they immediately starting using it as a marketing tool. I remember Doug Fischer mentioning the once prestigous Ring rankings beings completed by a single individual - (Satterfield or Giampa?). Now it's a select panel: Mike Coppinger Martin Mulcahey Mark Ortega Ryan Maquinana Ryan Songalia Harry Pratt Anson Wainwright Joe Koizumi Corey Erdman Their rankings have improved, but still seem a bit too GB agenda driven. Alvarez at #10 lb/lb?
The belts just look cool now... They truly have NO meaning besides being bargaining chips. That Green WBC & the (Ring) Red, White & Blue strap tho are easily the best fashion accessories in the sport by far.
I wish there was a canonical way of allocating linealship. It's what boxing needs. We also need lineal titles to have mandatory defenses against other world champions. Hey Floyd, defend your lineal title against Pac or be stripped. Hey Sergio, defend your lineal title against GGG or be stripped. The fact that Cotto might be allowed to defend his 160 Ring title at a 156lb catch weight with Bradley when GGG is there waiting is risible.
It would have been a great performance if martinez was fully fit but his body and legs were already destroyed
Any time you have a conflict of interest in rankings, it draws their validity into question. This is no different, and it's a shame really. The Ring really had a good thing going, with credibility intact(all things considered). Not so much anymore.
