Well I've decided to compete in next years golden gloves tournament. I've only had about 5 months of training, but... I don't think it should matter as long as I bust my ass. Stats: Age: 17 Weight: 132 Weightclass: Lightweight Picture: (Coming soon) I will be training everday except for Sunday, it might change because I have a job.. so yeah... might take up a lot of my training time. I usually spar with one of the trainers who can switch from southpaw and orthodox. I will be running (trying) 2 miles everyday in the morning, maybe more in the afternoon. Will be updated later each day of training.
You need at least 5 fights to enter the advancing tournament that will lead to National Golden Gloves, just so you know. Where do you live?
Killeen, I'm planning on getting my first fight at Golden Gloves. Jesse said it's a good place to start.
Then you'll be in the sub-novice category; and if you've been training for this amount of time, why not get fights before the tournament, when you could be put in with anyone up to 5 fights? I'm almost positive that most of Texas will have a sub-novice bracket.
They do have a sub-novice bracket, but not trying to rush anything. Only had about 3 sparring sessions, 1 tough, the other 2 were light contact sparring
Just keep going, but the tournament itself obviously won't start till after the new year; probably in February or so given the size of the Texas franchise. But I would always recommend getting in the ring as soon as your coach thinks your ready.
He said I was ready my first month of training, but I didn't have any sparring in so I didn't feel comfortable yet. Plus I want some more sparring in before getting in the ring.
That's the franchise finals. The preliminaries will start in February or late January, I would assume.
Yeah, that's right. I do feel like I'll do well. Though I don't think I fight enough as an amateur, I pick off my shots which I know is a no no with amateurs.
Um...that's fine. You still need to be busy; but you're not supposed to be a rock 'em sock 'em robot. The guy in red here is the National Champion; and he doesn't just flail, no open class amateur does. But you gotta be busy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO-rLvCBmlU
Right, those are the finals. Years past its been late January then its been mid-february. I have a feeling it'll be late-february for regionals...
