Does this elevation of Marciano, that is being referred to as occurring due to his whiteness apply just to him? All white potential greats? Or just HW’s? Is Demosey’s standing so high because he is white, or would it be the same? Marciano is clearly an Italian white American boxer, and during his time he was certainly revered by those 3 segments although I don’t find in inclusive or conclusive. I find it a farther stretch to say that his standing today is mitigated by any of those 3 factions to a great deal. Just my 2 cents
Dempsey was filling stadiums back then, partially due his whiteness. Most people today know who Jack Dempsey was. Wills was around at the same time and had similar accomplishments (in boxing, not pop culture), but is an unknown to the general public today.
You think that has more to do with race than style? Tyson overshadows Holyfield in pop culture, even losing to him twice. He outshadows Lewis and Wlad too. Dempsey also outshadowed Tunney.
How many black fighters ever drew anywhere near a million dollar gate in the 1920's?Maybe1930's? Would Louis be the first? Undoubtedly Dempsey's rockem sockem style contributed to it!
This thread gave me a headache Honestly, who cares about race politics stuff. Just leave the man be. This isnt a youtube comment section, grow up
Against Holmes Berbick was green.Mitch Green wasn't Berbick's best and most important win.Compared to Berbick Marciano looks like an average Joe (and i was kind).
Taken a census have you? Most people don't call professional boxers cowards,I can only think of one who has done so and I am replying to him now.
Langford was pretty damn exciting but we didn't see any promoters bending over backwards to give him a bunch of soft touches to create a popular mythology that would lead to the filling of stadiums.
A boxer who won't fight his best is a coward. Period. You know in your heart that most fans rightfully admire Marciano's records. I know why you don't honor them. I talked disrespectfully to you at one point because I thought you were one of these youngbloods. You are a man of some years and I am done with that, but I leave you pointing out that maybe it is time for you to look in the mirror and confront some things about yourself. Maybe you will, maybe you wont. Either way, somewhere, Marciano, and those who admired him, including Dempsey, Ali and Walcott, are laughing.
But we're talking about popularity. Of course that played a role. But to illustrate a broader point, Tunney had a great record, beat Dempsey twice, and never achieved anything close to his pop culture recognition that Dempsey enjoyed. Similar to comparing Tysons popularity with Holyfields.
When you can’t poke holes in his resume, you have to attack his race or race of his perceived fans. Floyd faces a different set of attacks, but again it is hard to poke holes unless we look for another angle of attack! Joe Calzaghe faces a different set of attacks.... And the attacks go on. There is always a faction looking to cast negative shadows on greats. Many people have a dislike of someone and grasp at straws to denigrate someone. No big deal if we are simply evaluating and contrasting greatness. Some are just not happy unless they can unequivocally show someone as a false great, and slander their way to accomplish that goal.
I respect Marciano as a champion and as a man. You telling me to look at myself after calling an all time great champion in Holmes a coward really is too much! Just give me a miss in future , I can't take you seriously ,if I did I'd begin to get annoyed.
