Thickness of skull is usually a fairly good indication of both punch resistance and overall ability to absord trauma. Referring to Cromagnon skeletons which were far more robust than humans today, they did have the iconic thick skulls. Fighters like JCC and Oliver McCall have notoriously thick skulls, the same with fighters like david tua and Evander Holyfield. Interesting to note however that most studies suggest that the 'chin' is finite and perhaps having the stronger chin is more dangerous to a fighter than having a weaker one on many levels.
To me, it seems that if you have quick enough reflexes, you can absorb the most punishment. If you see the punch coming, and can move your body/head/arms/etc. at the moment before it lands, that gives you the best defense you will ever get. The second thing that helps on my list is something that is what I consider 'naturally born'. You cant train for that, but certain fighters definitely have it. The combination of two would be some scary ****.
i think one of the biggest things is discipline in technique, namely keeping your chin tucked. when someone is knocked out, it is usually because they are literally "knocked out" as in their mental synchronization is knocked out of place. keeping your chin tucked reduces head movement when absorbing a punch, and thus though it still hurts, synchronization is maintained. check Hopkins. when's the last time you seen him hurt? 1993?
My question is the difference between susceptibility to knockdowns and the susceptibility to being knocked out or seriously stunned/hurt. JMM for example has been down loads of times, but rarely ever looks stunned or hurt and subsequently has never been knocked out.
People like you and contributions like this are exactly what it was my hope all the big words in this thread would scare off and filter out.
The man was built to take heavy hits. Didnt foreman smash his eyesocket and still couldnt knock him down. This content is protected This content is protected Straight up built to take bombs.
In the comic books, Captain America always claimed he rolled with the punches to effectively nullify full impact.

Archie Moore always fascinated me, he was ko'ed several times, and was knocked down over 50 times! Yet he was reciting poetry at the age of 80. Roberto Duran is 71 won fights in 5 decades, had 116 fights and was still sparring at age 64 and is sharp and eloquent today. While other fighters with 40 or 50 fights slur their speech like they're drunk, Riddick Bowe for example. Good punch resistance has a few well known markers that have been mentioned but there doesn't seem to be a one size fits all explanation
