Floyd knows he gets his big PPV numners from the opponent's fan base. In his fight with Oscar, most of the audience tuned in for Oscar. Against Hatton, there was a ton of Brits watching and in America Hatton was probably seen as a "white hope" just like Cooney was. The only reason Floyd gets such a big part of the purse is that the opponents have bad managers. A great businessman was Gerry Cooney's manager Dennis Rappaport. He told Larry Holmes' people that if they wanted a fight with the "great white hope" Gerry Cooney, thye had to give him 50%. They agreed, and Larry Holmes tells you why in this video (skip to 9:00): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvzrcigiWNM If other boxing managers were smarter, their fighters would get the money they deserve, instead of giving a huge chunk of it to Floyd. There would be more money in boxing too, and more big fights.
nice in theory... but you are all wrong fighters are clamoring for the opportunity for a floyd fight/payday everyone says it "who would passy up the opportunity...everyone wants to win the floyd sweepstakes".....for money and for the chance at being the one
when floyd was with bob arum....he asked bob to make the oscar fight...bob told him "no"....some claim floyd asked bob for a high guarantee that wasnt feasible....which if you believe that its fine.....bob told him "no ill lose money on the fight"....but bob was being shortsighted.....if bob believed in floyd....that hed win....even taking a slight loss at the time would have been worth it(which wouldnt have happened anyway)....because it would put floyd on the brink of superstardom(which it did).....bob thought the floyd he had was all hed ever be...... i dont think any of floyds past opponents are crying about what they got...or wishing theyd done things different.....if theres no floyd....theres no payday for them like that....
What you say is true, but that doesn't mean these fighters are smart businessmen. Yes, they're all asking for a big payday against Floyd, but if they all stopped doing that and every one of them asked Floyd for 50% at the negotiation table, then Floyd would have to give it to them. They should do what Gerry Cooney's manager did for the Holmes fight.
so if maidana goes to the table and asks for 50 percent do you think they dont laugh their asses off and kindly escort his manager out of a building or receive a dialtone? theyd just say "next" and some other soul would be in line for the money they do offer...its a simple concept to understand really
do you expect maidana, khan, porter, thurman, martinez, etc to all join forces and gang up on floyd and say "none of us are fighting you unless you give one of us 50 percent"???
Holmes had to do that because Cooney was the only guy he could big dollars with Floyd has options Floyd himself is also marketable and like able to plenty while being a good enough villain to bring in more Holmes had neither
Well, if you had read my post instead of just shooting your mouth off, you'd have noticed that I'd written: "Yes, they're all asking for a big payday against Floyd, but if they all stopped doing that and every one of them asked Floyd for 50% at the negotiation table, then Floyd would have to give it to them." Notice the word "all". That means if Floyd says "next", the next guy (who is part of the "all") also asks for 50%, and so on until Floyd agrees to pay people what they deserve. But if everyone would ask Floyd for 50%, Floyd would never even pick guys like Maidana. He would have called Manny Pacquiao instead. The only reason Floyd can get away with fighting guys like Guerrero and Maidana (who have few fans and no great wins on their resumes) is that Floyd takes 90% of the money, so even if the fight doesn't make much money, it all goes to Floyd, so it still makes for a nice payday.
Their managers should be smart enough to all ask for that money, with or without calling each other. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that a boxing fight is between 2 guys, and that one guy can't make money just fighting some bum off the street. The problem is that managers today are too stupid.
it seems like you expect a group of boxers to all make a silent agreement to join forces and demand that floyd pays one of them 50 percent which is utterly ridiculous..... oh excuse me maidana you dont like our offer....ok well talk to amir khan(but you expect khan to be in on this too when he is involved in the same company as floyd and maidana and join forces until one of them gets that 50 percent)....just crazy talk
you seem to forget that floyds opponents or list of...all work with the same company....and no matter what....whomever he selects is more than happy to take what is offered...more than happy.....floyd doesnt ever have to go to a 2nd option....
