Browsing the 1979 September Ring Ratings , we have Champ Wilfred Benitez 1 Jose Cuevas 2 Ray Leonard 3 Roberto Duran 4 Thomas Hearns 5 Pete Ranzany 6 Jorgen Hansen 7 Angel Espada 8 Andy Price 9 Dave Green 10 Manuel Jiminez My Question . Has there ever been a stronger depth of talent in the top 4 contenders ? Obviously the talent drops off significantly after them, but still very respectable contenders in the main . In passing, the 175pounders were very strong too. Champion Victor Galindez 1 Matt Franklin 2Marvin Johnson 3Alvaro Lopez 4 John Conteh 5 Mike Rossman 6 James Scott 7 Eddie Gregory 8 Lotte Mwale 9 Mustapha Wassaja 10 Rudi Koopmans Happy Days, and no Ukrainian robots dominating the richest prize in sports. P.S. 7 of the 10 rated heavyweight contenders were from the US.:think
There were only so many Americans because the Eastern europeans were not allowed to compete. Ukrainian robots > American bums.
The Lhvy Champ was Argentinian, the Welter Champ was Puerto Rican,The Jnr Middle was Japanese,,theJnr Welter was Colombian, the Light title was vacant, no 1 contender was Venezuelan,Bantam Champ was Panamanian,Jnr Light was Purto Rican,Jnr Feather Champ was Puerto Rican,Fly Champ South Korean . The world hasn't got bigger. American bums? Holmes Shavers Tate Weaver Jones Norton Ledoux Five of the seven very solid contenders for the vacant title. But why am I debating with you ? You think the Wlad fight was entertaining!!!!!atsch P.S. I am English.
Of course it is bigger now than then. Much more connected, much more chances for fighters from 3rd world countries to break through and of course the whole former Eastbloc is can compete now. You call those Ukrainians robots, I call those Americans bums. Same thing, old man. I never wrote the Wlad fight was entertaining. I know you are English, I don“t know how that matters though.
September 1979 * WBC Champion.........Wilfred Benitez * WBA Champion.........Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas 1.....Ray Leonard 2....Roberto Duran 3....Thomas Hearns 4....Pete Ranzany 5....Joergen Hansen 6....Angel Espada 7....Andy Price 8....Davey Green 9....Manuel Jiminez The Ring Magazine, wasn't always on the 'ball'. Also, both Carlos Palomino and Harold Weston Jr. had just retired. Otherwise, Carlos Palomino would have been ranked #4, and Harold Weston Jr. would have been ranked #6. #5 Joergen Hansen, got there based upon 'one single' right hand that he landed on Davey Green, otherwise, he was not really a Top 10 ranked Welterweight. #9 Manuel 'Yuca' Jiminez 18-2-0 (11 KO's), had just lost a 10-Round (Majority Decision) to Ruby 'The Snake' Ortiz 20-3-3 (7 KO's) in Puerto Rico. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some of the ranked WBA boys; * Harold Volbrecht (South Africa).......20-2-1 (4 KO's) * David Kambule (South Africa)..........24-1-0 (12 KO's) * Chris Clarke (Canada)....................19-0-0 (14 KO's) * Randy Shields (USA)......................33-5-1 (17 KO's) * Man-Deuk Lee (South Korea)...........18-2-0 (14 KO's) * Alfredo Ruben Lucero (Argentina).....27-3-4 (15 KO's) Randy Shields had just fought a 'controversial' 15-Round Decision with Pipino Cuevas in July 1979. Randy should have been ranked at least #5.
NNN, Did 'Davey Boy' Green deserve a WBC Welterweight Title shot versus Ray Leonard on March 31, 1980. I believe the call was - 'he was a safe opponent'. Despite the 33-2-0 (26 KO's) record, the 26 1/2 year-old 'Fenland Tiger' was 'damaged goods', and everybody knew it. The word going around was,,,,,,,, "if you hit him, he went to sleep".
Mony Mony, "Davey Boy' Green 33-1-0 (25 KO's) was 'starched' in 3-Rounds by 36 year-old 'Dane' Joergen Hansen in June 1979. Joergen, at 59-13-0 (27 KO's) was a {6-1 Underdog} in that bout for the European Welterweight Championship. The 'veteran' Danish fighter would have been a better opponent for Ray Leonard, than 'fragile' Davey Boy Green. This content is protected
Not to sure on the actual rankings, but we had a golden era in the 90's to early 2000's. Tito ODLH Mosley Quartey Sweat Pea In the mid 2000's we had : Mayweather Cotto Margarito Mosley Just after Mosley battered Margo in 09 we had : (Percived as top fighters) Mayweather Pac Mosley Cotto Berto
Pete Ranzany A hell of a good welterweight, was no better than 5th in 1979. May have been good enough, to defeat Carlos Palomino in 1977/1978/1979.
There was also Curry, Starling, Honeyghan, Breland, McCrory, Colin Jones It wasn't just welterweight either, pretty much most divisions were stacked silly, what an era [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjuHgYCxoKY[/ame]
