Any objective person would say Floyd. He's faster off the shoulder roll, gets hit less, counters with more fluidity, throws a counter uppercut better than any fighter in the sport, and most importantly has the footspeed to compliment that type of defense. Toney hasn't had that complimentary footspeed since his days at 160 and 168.
If you wanna see why the shoulder roll doesnt work for everyone watch Kevin Johnson vs Klitscko. Or better yet watch when Cotto and Zab Judah try to use the philly shell without an upper body movement. Its comical how easy they get tagged.
i am a big fan of both and I say Toney, he used it in more dangerous positions and did more damage with it
JT, it isn't even close. Mayweather depends a lot on footwork. JT will just sit in the pocket and **** you up. You know what the difference is between guys like Mayweather, Jones and Toney? Toney would still be kicking ass at an advanced age.
Toney, he isn't the fastest or the most powerful guy around but he knows how to not get hit by rolling his shoulder, floyd has other aspects to his defense, the shoulder roll is just one part.
Cos its hard to use. They do teach it- but it takes alot of counterintuitive instintct to do it- firstly to be able to not cover your face- and accept being able to move it to avoid punches- without flinching. to make people miss by a little - not alot. They teach it at my Gym- but to be honest nobody gets it right- at least with the high guard- you get it wrong you still get some deflection- you get a shoulder roll wrong - you get youre lights turned- i should know. think of the world class fighters- like oscar and hatton who have gone to floyd senior to lean it- but been unable to realy use it. it takes a special fighter- with special instincts to really use it well. trust me- we all wish we could use it and fight like floyd- those that do fight. who wouldnt want to hit without being hit- and conserve energy when you need it.
both great defensive fighters edge goes to toney he will sit in pocket mame you miss an pay more often than not floyds more on the move witch explains his dull fights
Yeah, but he's rolling 'em with the shoulder, getting hit on the arm, or blocking with his glove. Toney also doesn't hold as much. Not nearly.
Toney. I thnk Kalambay used it best though, though he didn't use it as much as Toney.he wouldn't only counter with a right hand, but would instantly counter with a right uppercut from any distance and almost never get countered in return, even against fighters the calibre of Mike McCallum.
