He was 9 years old at the time. They asked if he could jump rope. They tapped up his hands put the gloves on him and took him to a big mirror. Petey told him to punch his reflection right at the nose. Always at the nose. He then asked if he if he ever saw Michael Jackson dance? Petey said MJ does this shoulder roll and he had my son practice the shoulder roll while balancing on one foot alternating right and left. They made him excercise like he was in boot camp. Crab walk and a small medicine ball. Had him hit the big bag (never got to the speed bag tho) He finally got to go inside the ring and hit the mitts. It was his first lesson and he had a blast :good If you're ever in New York City Manhattan, for 30 bucks you can get a introductory lesson @ Trinity Gym Greenwhich street right around the corner from Ground Zero. It's the best bargain I ever found in NYC :good
They basically just had him get used to roatating and keeping his hands up like that? I just want to know how is it that they actullay get trained to use the shoulder roll and how to throw a punch from that position after defending. The art is genuis to me and quite unknown. I don't know any pro fighter that uses it or amateur. I got to alot of amateur gyms down here int he south and very rarely do I see it. He didn't continue to train?
Just like you said on his very first lesson they were getting him used to rotating and keeping his hands up. He never got to the point how the shoulder roll would actually be used in the ring. It was more of an excercise to loosen up but Petey said "This is a shoulder roll" He does continue to train in California but he does it for medical reasons. He has a condition where his lungs clog up and boxing excercises helps clear his lungs out. He could never be a boxer but he loves the sport :good

Toney does it so well at times you don't even know he's doing it, then Bham, he hits you with the right! I would agree it looks alot more natural than Mayweathers.
It's the body built that contributes to that success. A heavily built boxer with big shoulders could easily tuck their chin under that shoulder. This is not for everyone. In Tall and lanky and thin fighters, rolling your shoulder still exposes the temple for a temple shot or behind the head shot. Toney does it differently than Mayweather because toney is more squared up which is unusual for doing that kind of defense. However it allows Toney to deliver more solid punches. Mayweather does it more on defensive mode, meaning on flank position with the lead hand cocked to throw punch. That arm associated with the side of the shoulder that is doing the roll is sneaky because it travels less distance to connect, which is the bread and butter of Gayweather.
Mad props to whoever posted El Intocable Niccolino Locche. If you didn't know about him you better learn or else yall musta forgot!
