The similarities in the fighters I think are overrated.

Dont mistake famous names for quality "scalps". He beat plenty of contenders as I stated before he cleaned out the division. Cant really blame him for being ducked a few years.

There are many celebrated heavyweights like Dempsey and Marciano and Frazier whose resume Liston`s looks just fine next to.

Young may survive but Sonny isnt going to gas like Foreman did. It would probably end up like the Machen fight.

This is entirely plausible, and largely depends on which Young shows up. Unlike Jimmy, Sonny was pretty consistent.

I rate Liston's resume slightly higher. No ducks, no stone underturned. I rate him over Dempsey for a more complete destruction of the division, something Dempsey chose not to achieve.

    Dempsey's 5 best victories....

    Willard
    Sharkey
    Fulton
    Gibbons
    Firpo

    Liston's 7 best victories
    Patterson (x2)
    Williams (x2)
    Foley
    Machen
    Roy Harris

Willard was very old and innactive, tho obviously a necessary victory. The Sharkey result was a bit dubious but "protect yourself at all times". A top quality victory. Fulton went on to be proven not nearly as good as he was considered at the time Dempsey flattened him. Gibbons was a very quality win. Firpo was something of a non-entity, a major fall-off from the other four. He is a name only because of the drama of the fights and that he should have been given the victory over Dempsey.

Liston destroyed Patterson twice, a Patterson who would continue to be a top-flight heavyweight for a decade. Williams, tho overrated, was a legit powerpuncher, probably analogous to a Fulton. Foley was on the best run of his career with victories over Machen, Besmanoff and Miteff. Machen was top flight. Roy Harris had a pretty record with some nice names, but like Firpo, he's a major drop-off at number 7.

Patterson was different after the Liston fights. His style changed a bit, fought smarter IMO Im not saying he could have ever beat Liston, probably could have lasted longer though... the post-Liston Patterson.

Carlos Zarate hands down, his accomplishment, reign, victories over ranked opposition pale in comparison to most top 10 bantams.....yet is consistently ranked way to high in bantam rankings!

That's right, and people who rave at Ali's beating of Williams forget Liston crushed Williams twice when he was in his prime. Ditto Patterson, who gave Ali a good fight in their second encounter. Liston is underrated, if anything.

Tyson was in his early twenties when he lost to a journeyman. But you still rank him highly, and not Monzon. Why? As you said "I really don't know".. that's probably why.

Durans loses to hearns and hagler dont count for much. Hes s much smaller man. The fact that he hung and gave hagler a real fight proves his greatness even more.

Martin was a good fighter, if he didn't fight Liston he'd be viewed alot better because liston ruined his career by beating him down. Martin got him with a lucky shot and won. Liston would beat 90% of world champions who stepped in the ring. Any come forward fighter would lose to Liston except perhaps foreman if he can land first because he has the chin and power to possible whoop liston. Liston isn't overated, Joe louis is better overall, but he'd not be able to take those kind of punches that Liston can dish out, most boxers cannot.

Monzon isn't overrated he is in the top 3 all time middleweight.

Duran is great, I don't think he can be overrated, when he met alot of those guys like hearns he was way past his prime and often was carrying fat. This guy is like a lightweight fighting his way up to super middleweight, that'd be like pacman or lara fighting up to andre ward level. Duran fights guys in their prime, he doesn't go around fighting washed up guys.
