of Boxing. i thought this before and the thought has resurfaced itself. David haye has been talking about being the saviour of HW boxing and for boxing in general. but you just cant do that when you fight every 6-8 months. this has always been a problem with haye, theres too much time inbetween fights. you become famous for a week and then you're forgotten by the public. tyson and other old timers fought a few times a year. calzaghe has the same problem and so does another british up and comer...carl froch.
He needs this time between fights for bulking up sensibly and not rushing it, have some ****ing patience its only 2 months till the fight im sure he'll be more active after this one.
The reason he has time off because is partner was having a child, Haye said that in many interviews, look I think he has more tools than any HW out there now, But his chin will be his down fall, all great fighters need a very good chin.
every time he's in big fights, he takes ages to prepare. from the fragomeni fight to the bonin fight, it took 5 months when it should have been nothing more than 3. it took another 7 months before he fought mormeck. 4 months later he's fighting enzo, 4 months is fine. but it is nothing compared to what its supposed to be like. great champions like toney and even a guy like eubank who is a great fighter in his own right. eubank used to fight every 2 or 3 months in championship fights. Toney used to fight 5-7 times per year when he was champ, he even fought 6 weeks after he won the TITLE!! yes i agree haye has all the tools (maybe even a chin) to fight and win titles at heavyweight. i jst dont like him having huge gaps between fights, the public have a bad memory.
He needs a SOLID defense first. When Haye learns to keep his right hand up great things may await him.
Davids been a pro for what 6 years now? He`s been fighting since he was a kid. And yet he STILL hasnt learnt to keep his hands up? He`s not RJJ and he`s not PBF. He`s definitly talented and im sure he`s aware of his own deficiencies. He wont need to take punches if he can learn a solid defense.
I read one recent interview where Haye admitted to his punch resistance being questionable, and he could not stand and trade, so he adjusted his game, accordingly. Something to that effect. It was refreshing to hear a fighter admit to a vulnerability.
I think the infrequency of fights is a problem not just for Haye, but for heavyweight boxing in general. The other problem is that when we do have fights, they don't televise them! So some guy is fighting for the title, yet it's the first time we see of or hear of them. Then, if they lose, we never see or hear of them again.
Is it just me or does anyone else not think a guy who professes to walking around at 224-230, is needing 6-8 months of bulking up? I must admit i have never seen Haye out of shape, even when he isnt fighting he is in very good shape. Its just got me thinking why a guy would need all this time to add muscle that is already there.
well the big gap between bonin and mormeck was down to don king. can't really blame haye for that. once he's finally had this november fight, hes supposed to be having his next one in early 2009, which i take to mean around 4 months later. unless he gets injured or can't find an opponent (haha) he'll be fighting more regularly than every 8 months
