That is actually a decent list and shows the HW division is improving. I think with the addition CW's Haye and Adamek, and return of Vitali has made things better compared to a little while ago 2005

Also another problem with the HW division is Vitali and Wlad are brothers, they been top 10 HW for a long time and will never fight one another.

No, they just haven't beaten anyone who lives up to your rather tendentious standards. By any thinking boxing fan's estimation, Chris Byrd was certainl a prime, proven, top-class heavyweight. Wlad beat him twice. But since you are clearly biased against taller fighter, you don't register that as a great win. Sad.

 

Dude in a way I can see what you are trying to get at, but to think some of the past heavy's would have a chance against the Klitschkos is crazy. For one you said Ali had problems with Foreman, not true Foreman was baited into tiring himself out. Trap set, released and accomplished. I pretty much agree with the writer, the heavy weight division sucks as it did at the end of Larry Holmes run and the end of Lewis's run. The Klitschko's are a total bore to watch. I was a big fan of Vitalily's because even though his style was robotic, he used foot work and faints to set his opponents up for the kill( or should I say KO). Now, he runs around the ring as if he's scared but still not as bad as Wlad. Mayweather for instance, his fight were becoming boring but in his last 3 or 4 he has stepped it up and now fight like he did in the past. The Heavyweight of today are bad, I believe some of the top heavies of the past would clean todays division out from top to bottom. Vitaly would have a chance to compete, Wlad's glass whiskers would have him taking many deep sleeps in my opinion.

 

I think your dislikes of HW boxing are more rooted in society than boxing.

Size - As HW men are less athletic now due to the NBA and NFL the quality of American HWs has diminished drastically. Less skills and the more size is the deciding factor.

Conditioning - Westerners in general are just fatter and less fit. The increase in size of HW started in the early 1900's and just progressed into obesity.

Great Fights - There are just few fights to make. The Klits have beaten EVERYONE and now they are picking at the carcass of the HW division. The experience and professionalism difference is just light years apart.

Until the money and cultivation of the sport return? What can you do? Make peanuts getting brain damage or make league minimum of $500k riding the bench? The choice is a no brainer. It is what it is.

 

Sorry man. Both of the Klits were taxed by SHOT HWs. No way they hung at HW during the competitive years.

Not to say they wouldn't win fights, but both of them would not be boxing today had they been competing in the US during the early half of their careers. No way.

 

Yes, it's extaordinarily weak. (it's not an official list at all. It's just the Ring's or whoevers).

Haye and Adamek have had less than 10 heavyweight fights between them. And already they're in the top 5.

Nobody can get the #3 fighter on that list to take up his mandatory shot. That's just mind blowing. He's 31 years old, and isn't "ready" for a title shot.

Haye and Adamek right now in heavyweight terms are showing promise. the others are nothing more than B class fighters. And the only reason Haye and Adamek are doing well is because they've come from the lower weights.

Having some skills and actually getting in shape gets you in the top 5 of the heavyweight ranks, in under 5 fights each. That's pathetic. Might be OK if you come up and grab a belt (Understandable in Haye's case, he's got a belt, so has to be there).

But Adamek? That's a joke. Not because he shouldn't be ranked there (be probably should), but because of obviously how **** weak the rest of the divison is.

 

Yeah agree on that one. Ali was generally the bigger fighter. Not always though. He was matched equally on size, or was the smaller man a few times.

His size advantage is understated though. Even with the Foreman fight, there wasn't a struck match between them in size, but it's always "Little old Ali vs big bad George".

Foreman was an anomoly though (and did beat an ex LHW). At his age, it was a miracle, unbelievable that a guy that old could win a title. (And he did it by getting 2 shots, and landing a good shot on a weak chin while being outboxed).

Nowadays, guys fight into their late 30's all the time. I don't think it's that nutrition etc is getting better, it's that the current fighters aren't as skilled or as in shape as they used to be. That's why old guys can still hang with the young guys, when they never could before.

Watch the Foreman/Moore fight again. I did the other day, and was shocked at the appearance of Foreman. At the time it was 'fat Old George, eating Burgers between rounds". Even he said it, and made a fortune from his grilling machines because of it.

But he was in far better shape than a lot of guys that are young and challenging for belts today.

Briggs in a slugfest? Throwing 2 punches a round?

the very fact that old pineapple head at his advanced age and limited movenment can still win a belt, and might still get a title shot tells you everything you need to know.

You have completely, totally lost me on this one. The vast majority of Wlad's last 10 fights have been woeful. They may have been ranked guys on the whole, but they were ****.

Chambers was OK (but was never going to win)

Chagaev. Ok on paper, but always doubtful about guys that can't get medical clearances in some places.

Rahman. A joke. But late stand in so can't really complain.

Thomson? He's a very average fighter IMO. Hit Wlad hard in the body in the first 2 rounds, then put his earmuffs on and waited to be KO'd. A limited fighter IMO, had ZERO tools to beat Wlad. Deserved his shot on rankings without doubt, but isn't very good really.

Sultan? Ugh. My eyes bled watching that. I was watching it after I know the result and just gave up. It was awful.

Brewster. I get the revenge thing, but he had one eye.

Austin and Brock? No comment.

Byrd. Had a belt. Of course Wlad had to fight him. Had retained his belt via a string of dodgy decisions up till that fight. McCline, Golota etc could all feel robbed IMO.


And for you to even list Castillo as anything other than a patsy is laughable.

That's ridiculous. Why don't you think Lewis could beat him? For a while people were saying Vitaly was the better brother, and Lewis beat him at damn near 38 years of age. That's not nostalgia, that's fact.

I would beat my last dollar that Frank Bruno would have beaten the last 10 fighters Wlad has beat. Doesn't make him unbeatable by ATG's, it just means he's tall, has a good jab and a good right hand.

No, he just doesn't want to fight Wladimir Klitschko because he sees no way to win. That's how dominant Wladimir Klitschko is.

Arreola would be competitive in almost all eras, Povetkin despite being afraid of Wlad represents one of the best amateur boxers to ever go pro and since his early fights, was defeating fringe contenders.

So at one point you say Adamek shows great promise, now it's a joke that he's ranked in the top ten (considering he has HW wins over Golota (perrenial contender), Estrada (seen as a bright hope for American boxing, fading (like so many others) ) and Arreola...

So he's beaten a guy who was recently ranked #3, has only lost to the HW world champ and suddenly, Adamek is over-rated and a joke for being in the top 10?

The decline in American heavyweights from a number and pure skill standpoint has been taking place since the sport's popularity peaked here (from a participant standpoint) in the 1930's. We've been losing athletes to other sports and better jobs ever since. The only reason people are noticing now is that foreign competition is, for the first time in boxing history not only at the top of the division, but making up most of the top 10. Boxing wasn't getting it's choice of athletes when Ali, Holmes, Frazier, and Tyson were running things, either. But great ones still made it through the system despite the smaller talent pool to draw from. The only differences between now and then are that the top notch athletes aren't just developed here, and that contenders don't fight each other near as often as they should.

You do realise that Holyfield NOW only just lost a contentious decision for the WBA belt? At least 10 years past being decent?

That at 39 years of age, the only legitimate challenger to Vitaly is his 34 year old brother, or a cruiserweight with 3 heavyweight fights?

That most of the guys around today are having a second career almost, purely because there is almost nobody under the age of 28 that's even worth bothering with?

Maskaev, Rahman, Toney etc should have been retired years and years ago. But they aren't. Why? because they're still genuine chances of beating the pile of shite now called heavyweights.

Look at Arreola. Fat tub of lard with no skills, but still considered a top level fighter. He's not even on par with the Tommy Morrisons of the world. Arreala would have been destroyed by the likes of Briggs, Morrison, Ruddock, Mercer, nutjob Golota etc in the 90's.

Tyson beats the **** outta Wlad.

 

If they have wins over top fighters as soon as they move up, yeah, that's fine. They deserve recognition based on their achievements, and the qualigy of the division they're moving into. One guy is understandable. Two is crazy.

No. That's how **** weak Povetkin is.

Tyson was much more dominant and frightening in his day, but plenty of guys stood up to the mark against him.

Arreola is rubbish. He has no skills, no conditioning or professionalism, and no boxing brain.

He's not even as good as guys like Joe Bugner.

Adamek's not a joke. He's a serious fighter having a serious go at getting a heavyweight belt. I'm saying the rest of the division is a joke because he's clearly ranked so high. He deserves his spot in this division, because he's one of the few that tries.

Golota fight was a joke man, come on. He was 41 years old, and if they weren't Poles would never have fought.
