Glass jaw theory... When a man is tapped on that thing he constantly falls out and loses by stoppage.. I remember a heavyweight a few years ago who got tagged on his chin in most of his bouts and never looked like recovering once he got cracked.. Thomas Williams of DC.. I always remember saying, now i know what a glass jaw is referring to.. At the highest class , if a fighter gets caught once and KO'd he is just unlucky. Bruno, Tyson, Lewis , aren't glass jawed.. But a few journeymen like .. eg: Lorenzo Boyd is quite a chinny fighter, he has fought almost everyone "Tyson, Biggs, Mason, Morrison etc..." and got Ko'd by all of em.. Carl Williams is often remembered for being Ko'd .. or knocked over.. Down against Jerry Jones , Tyson, Ferguson, Bruno, Weaver and knocked down after some of those knockdowns, i have him in the chinny department.. Too many knockdowns .. and a few Ko's.. The one off is Larry Holmes, Knocked down often, but knocked out only by the best.. Thebest recouperative powers i ever saw.. Glass jaw is a bad term to define, but it really depends on which class we are referring to.. Interesting..
I can only consider a guy glass jawed if the fight is stopped because of it. Almost all of the greats have been knockdown, and most more than once. Some good examples: 1) Marciano: kd'd numerous times but never seriously hurt 2) Ali: kd'd numerouse times but never stopped (Holmes does not count IMO) 3) SRR: Lots of KD's only stoppage was exhaustion. 4) Young SRL: KD'd and hurt many times, never stopped. 5) Calzaghe: same as Marciano 6) Hopkins: " " " There are also grades of glass: Hearns took some good shots over the years but got KO'd too much, so I rate him having good glass. Wlad's glass is mostly psychological, so he may be upgraded when all is said and done.
:good Look how many times Trinidad got knocked down in his career. If one were to personally box and understand what its like to get hit and your bell rung than you'd appreciate the circumstances that these boxers are placed in.
The people who usually talk smack about so and so having a weak chin are the flamers anyway. They think it's a pretty good cut and makes him (and by association his fans) look like pussies. They usually know the least about boxing and just want to argue and talk bull****. Good thread.
Sorry, but history shows that a solid chin is an important attribute in boxing. All things being equal, the guy with the better whiskers is more likely to win the fight. It seems as if many posting in this thread greatly underestimate the importance of good punch resistance and durability. And, sure, getting knocked down doesn't necessarily mean a fighter has a glass jaw. However, getting knocked the f*ck out does - particularly if it happens more than once.
i agree with the early part but disagree with the later. It all depends on the guys styles and capabilities if the better whiskers will prevail. when two come forward fighters get together the better chin will prevail. but when a china chin posses good boxing skills, this can guard him against certain styles of good fighter also would you say that gene fulmer because he got knocked out by a perfect punch thrown by ray robinson? the record does not always tell the story. you have got watch fights before deciding on whether a fighter has a glass jaw
wladimir klitchko with his china chin would be able to beat very good fighters who don't posses great power but if he fights someone like a pime tyson he gets knoxked out
I don't disagree. CONTEXT is important. But generally speaking, when a fighter is knocked out for the count multiple times, that's a pretty good sign that they don't have the sturdiest whiskers. And certainly, shaky chinned fighters can make adjustments so that they avoid getting knocked out. Quite a few have and gone on to have excellent careers IN SPITE of their poor punch resistance. A glass jaw is a serious flaw, but it is one that can be overcome in some cases.
i agree when a guy has been ko'd a few times it means that he does have a weak chin. but being ko'd once or twice by an ATG puncher does not indicate of any glass in the jaw area
