I liked Joe...I think he's a first ballot HOF....

However...

He had more than few BS stoppages in the UK. There Is a youtube out there that shows them all. I think that blemishes his record a bit.

Joe Calzaghe was a great fighter. As a pro, he never lost, and he had a good resume. He had great handspeed for a 168 pounder, was a southpaw, terrific and underrated footwork, a high boxing IQ, a very good chin, and the best engine ever for anyone his size. Nobody and I do mean nobody can take any of that away from him. However, his victory over Roy Jones is highly overrated. Why you may ask. Let's look at the facts. Before they fought, Jones was ktfo by Antonio Tarver and ktfo by featherfisted Glen Johnson. Those are inarguable facts. As Calzaghe was a great fighter, Jones was twice ktfo years before Calzaghe fought him. And by 2 fighters that nobody will ever consider ATGs. In fact, Jones looked so feeble that Calzaghe wrote in his autobiography years before they fought that Jones was shot and there would be no reason to fight him because of that, even though Calzaghe cashed out against him years later. Let's continue. On the comeback trail, Jones beat F Trinidad, A Hanshaw and J Lacy, hardly a murderers row at 175. In fact, Trinidad hadn't fought in years, had never fought at 175 and was considered chinny at 147 where he was prime. He was actually more shot than Jones was. And yet Jones still couldn't knock him out. And then JC whooped his ass afterwards but couldn't stop him. Due to the evidence that actually happened going into the Calzaghe Jones fight, Jones was either 1. shot to **** like Calzaghe said in his autobiography years before they fought, or 2. vastly overrated in the 1st place. I haven't a problem with either scenario, or both for that matter.

The fight with BHOP could have easily been a draw. But of course Joe didn't do rematches..unless their name was Veit...you could tell at the end of the fight Joe didn't feel too sure he'd done enough to win..Why the hell did he not take on Pavlik instead of Jones? He could have gotten the credit for dismantling Pavlik...there's no denying his talents but he waited too long to prove himself..

 

No. Calzaghe won the Hopkins fight outright. I had him up by 2-3 points as Bernie tried to spoil when it was obvious that he couldn't get it done. On another note, no question Calzaghe would have made Pavlik look amateurish.

 

SD is not outright, but he did indeed catch up to edge out the gassing 40something.
