How significant was / is this title? Great fighters came from down there.....did the fighters seek out this title as a definitive proud point in their career?
It was important, it was news on the papers....but I´m not sure if is right to say that the fighters seek out the SA title as a definitive proud point in their career.....
The Commonwealth and European titles use to be genuine stepping stones to a world title shot. Do you think the SA Title use to carry the same weight when seeking out bigger money fights in the states Vic?
I believe so Bugger, I know the arenas were always completely full when the SA title was in the line.....
Before there were a million & one WBalphabet and intercontinental titles, these sorts of regional titles (SA, Commonwealth, European, OPBF and even African to some extent) carried weight as a way of moving towards a title shot. As recently as the late 1980s/early 1990s, Adilson Rodrigues repeatedly got serious shots, despite having never beaten a major opponent outside of South America.
The South American Championships were worth 'good' dinero. Especially in Argentina Dinero by Rankings 1} Argentina 2} Venezuela 3} Brazil 4} Trinidad and Tobago 5} Colombia 6} Peru 7} Ecuador 8} Uruguay 9} Chile 10} Guyana 11} Paraguay 12} Boliva
There's something in the water...or in the air down in SA,...I've always seen Monzon, Jofre, Galindez, Locche, etc., as being the elite of boxing...and i know my friend Vic will agree with me on this.
