He showed up for the money & then laid down in the most cowardly fashion possible. It’s cast a long spectre over his career & Im glad, personally.
I think the KO was legit. Tyson was a powerhouse that night. Watch how Spinks head bounces off the canvas. If you're faking a fall, you're not going to let your head slam on the canvas. You can also tell how his eyes were glazed over when he attempted to rise.
Michael was better without question but when they were younger, Leon use to destroy everyone including Michael. Kenny Loehr was a legendary St Louis trainer that swore Leon was the most talented fighter he ever worked with and Kenny was very involved with the US amateur boxing program for decades. Leon had a stellar amateur background but his well documented out of the ring behavior led to his inconsistency in the pros.
I really see the vision of Spinks looking at the referee & “falling” into the ropes completely differently. I have seen non-fighters handle hitting their head on concrete so I’m not as impressed by some with the idea of his head hitting the canvas. It looks like lucid terror as he watches the referee count to me.
I think Michael beats Leon at both weights Cruiserweight or Heavyweight decision both times I actually don't see Michael stopping him although I could be wrong.
You reckon he threw the fight? Based on performance or is there anything more to it? You don't have to worry about me making this a whole big argument or anything bro. Give me the full kabosh, I just want your opinion because I've never heard anyone complain about the Tyson fight. I've always heard it like it was just bad timing. Spinks aged out of being competitive. So I am just interested in the dissention. I have no stance or points to make. Teach me, please.
He got hit with big shots that he couldn't handle. He came to fight tho, he tried to unleash The Jynx, but Tyson saw right through it. I mean, hella props to Mike, he destroyed Spinks in the manner that some people think he threw the fight. That's the stuff that legends are made of.
It’s well-established Spinks was reluctant to exit the dressing room. Reluctant to sign for the fight. Big money, & his team, eventually chased him into the ring. Then when he gets in there…I won’t pretend to feel strongly about the initial knockdown. Very possible Spinks took the knee to get Tyson off him, or perhaps he really was hurt enough to go down. But what came next seems remarkably inauthentic to me. Spinks gets dropped, & our next shot of him is looking at the referee. His eyes aren’t rolling, no rapid blinking, he just stares, seemingly to me, with focus on the referee (& perhaps the count). Then he gets up near the end of the count, & falls into the ropes, which again does not look genuine to me at all. Of course, no one here will ever know the truth. But looking at him on the canvas, married to his dressing room panic, I strongly believe he feigned not being able to beat the count, & either came in ready to steal the money with a non-performance, or bailed at the first sign of danger, his confidence already at near-zero from the outset. & if I’m right, then Spinks is deserving of all the contempt in the world. I am not swayed by cries of, “Who are you to judge?” I know who I am to judge.
Both gold medalists at the same Olympics, if we take those versions of the two, then the fight is more even, but I would say that Michael wins...
