In the light of last nights fight do you think the standing 8 could make a return in a positive light?.

We have plenty of trigger happy referee's over here but would this save such stupidity like last night?.

There's pro's and con's, Pro's are obviously the fight could go on futher if a ref stepped in to give a count those seconds recovery could be priceless. But then on the flipside we could also see a fighter robbed of points when he's fine and the ref thinks he isn't and we also then may see a fighter on way to scoring a stoppage stopped from finishing his work.

Just putting it out there, my views are it could make a comeback but it would have to be tweaked with a commonsense approach.

But i do worry that it would mare more fights, It's a tough one but it would of helped Enzo stay in the contest last night that's for sure.

Maybe a full back for ref's?. Use very rarely but there if needed?.

    Thoughts fella's?.

I think seeing a fighter lose a round 10-8 wrongly is better than seeing him lose a fight wrongly.

Never liked it. It breaks the flow of action and a lot of time gets the fighter hurt worse than if the fight had been left to go its course.

If refs are stopping fights too early then that should be addressed rather than changing to rules to accomodate poor refs.

    Valid points there Gaz.

So far we have a even debate on pro's and con's.

I just think IJL is trigger happy due to the pasting that Briggs took. His stoppage in the Corley/McCloskey was the same as last night. Also, with everyone talking about enzo getting hurt I think that was in the back of his mind. Saying that, I wouldnt have a problem with the introduction of standing counts, weird that its not the same over the world, seems abit bizarre.

No doubts Smoggy, He knew he done a wrong-un as soon as he done it. He went in with a preconcieved idea of the fight. Bad prep and bad refereeing.

I quite like the idea of standing 8 counts.

To be fair, the job of a referee is not an easy one. Safety of the fighter is the referee number one priority. A standing 8 count would serve as a tool to allow the ref to fully evaluate the condition of the fighter before making their decision whether or not the bout should be stopped.

This could certainly reduce the number of premature stoppages.

However, this has the potential to prolong a beating and possibly reduce a fighters safety. Maybe it could be limited to one (possibly 2) 8 counts per bout.?

What used to happen a lot though Rich was that either the refs would use the standing 8 count too often which would break the action just when it was getting interesting and cost a fighter an undeserved 10-8 (as Happy says though, better than losing the fight!) BUT what also used to happen was that the fighter in trouble would get a 10-8 count and pull himself together just enough to be able to go on and take more of pasting from an opponent who'd had a chance to compose himself and renew his attack.

I don't like it because of the effect it has on the fight as a spectacle and I'm not convinced its particulary good for the boxers safety.

Either way your reliant on the quality of the ref.
From an entertainment perspective the standing count would be better than poor stoppages. It's also better for the fighters to be given a chance rather than a definitive stoppage, it also gives their corner a few seconds to make the decsion to stop it if their man is badly hurt, but his pride is keeping him in there to the potential determent of his long term health.
While you have the human influence in making any of these calls I think you help them as much as you can and give them the time to make the right call.
Big yes from me for the standing count.

  11. IJL just stopped the invetible

thing about a standin 8 count is it can stop someone whos hurt about to get knocked out then they can recover but then they will take more punishment which can do major damage because the fight woulda been stopped if there was no standin 8

If that's the way the sport is going why even let Enzo take the fight.
Why not let small screen experts decide every fight before a punch is thrown?

Then their corner should pull them out. They should know their fighters better than anyone.

but there was a japanese boxer or somethin who died he got knocked down right at the end of a round then he recovered the fight went the distance then he died after, once you get badly hurt even if u recover and everyone thinks your fine its not good for u
