Bumped in view of Rose v Jones last night

Also relevant to Price v Thompson I

Guy gets clipped hard and stumbling all over the place without going down?
    Administer the standing eight.

After the count, if he's still falling around the place and in no condition to continue, just call the fight.

Presumably if this rule was in force Rose could have been given a count and therefore the ref would have sufficient time to make an important decision.

    David Price v Thompson I
    Froch v Groves I

Both fights would have been less controversial

Definitely a place for it. Trouble is refs will be accused of using it to favour the home fighter of course.

Then again if you can't knock someone out legitimately you shouldn't be gifted a KO/TKO by a refereeing error either.

Stopping a fight too quickly not only robs the boxer but also robs the crowd/viewing public of a fight they expect to see run to its natural conclusion.

It's a tough one as it works both ways. In some instances it will save a fighter's health and in others it will ruin his dreams.

I'd like to see it introduced, but used sparingly.

I don't see the point in it.
    What's it for ?

The only thing I see it doing is :

    1. Prolonging a beating, potentially causing added damage to a fighters's health.

    2. Influencing the tide of a match.

I don't understand what else can be achieved. If a fighter is hurt enough for a referee to step in, then that should be the end of the fight.

But if he goes down he gets a 10 seconds pause whereas if he stays on his feet there is no chance to assess

Compare Benn v McClennon or Provodikov v Algeria to Froch v Groves I or Rose v Jones

Fights get stopped with both men on their feet all the time.

Knockdowns are a complete different matter. Allowing a fighter 10 seconds to get up is one of the fundamentals of Queensberry rules. It's basic, like throw-ins in football.

If people think "standing eight count" is going to help solve "premature stoppages" and help referees protect fighters, I think that's a big mistake.
It just gives more opportunity for bad calls and fatal mistakes.

    ... in my opinion
