Steve Bunce and Setanta have really put the sport back on the map with "Steve Bunce's boxing hour" aired every Thursday on Setanta sports news with various repeats. This programme isn't just for the hardcore boxing fan. Although we all appreciate it the most, no question. It's reaching out to the wider audience who are flicking through channels looking for something to watch that involves sport. I never use to like Buncey too much. He does over-dramatise, now and again, some of the topics he discusses. However, Bunce's knowledge cannot be questioned. He's got the contacts within the sport and it's him who continually brings the best names to the weekly programme. I'm sure Setanta themselves are scouting for the best names to get on the phone and discuss up and coming fights. But Buncey is the 'heart and soul' of the programme. I'd like to see the programme have a phone-in or a weekly competition for signed books, gloves, photos, etc. Thoughts?
They ought to do some prank phone calls. Try ringing up Mike Tyson and saying I ****ed your daughter for a laugh.
i'm gonna repeat what i put on another thread... << way back there somewhere ............................... i'm guessing that sticking to a time schedule is hard for them on the programme...each time they have a guest on they don't, like other programmes that go out live, interupt the guest...and like hopkins last week, sometimes the guests go on a bit...i'm sure in a lot of cases longer than steve and andy would like... if they pre-recorded the guests and edited to show the best part of the interview they may get more into the show..but then would that take away from a winning formula?...i dunno... ...and yes...great show...the voice of the boxing fan !!
Here's my £0.02. Good things about Bunce: 1. Bunce's bombastic one-of-the-lads type enthousiasm is contageous and sells well with the casual fan, so he makes people excited about boxing who otherwise wouldn't be. This is most important thing. 2. He has plenty of top-level contacts, both from outside and inside the UK. Someone who can get interviews with Don King, Hopkins, Haye, Calzaghe, RJJ...anyone at all, in boxing, has a lot of influence, so is taken seriously. Some of the time, he is not afraid to ask some pertinent, unconfortable questions. This is very important. 3. Bunce is not afraid to speak his mind or give an opinion, even about the most controversial or difficult subjects, most of the time. Very important. 4. Bunce gets about and meets a lot of people and works pretty hard, so he is good value for money too. Important. Bad things about Bunce: 1. Bunce thinks he knows much more about boxing than he in fact does. He's not a great analyst of fights and often gets clear-cut analyses badly wrong but still continues to speak with much aplomb and authority, making very definitive wrong statements when he should know better. He is superficial too. This is very important. 2. Bunce is not so much a fan of the sport of boxing as a fan of the business of boxing. He thinks like a promoter, not like a fan and is more interested in what makes best business sense than in what makes best boxing sense. He uses his influence mostly to promote the interests of promoters rather than those of the boxing fans. Very important and completely unwarranted, unless he has a personal stake in the business. 3. Bunce is biased against foreign fighters and biased in favour of British fighters, not just when it comes to expressing a preference, or making a prediction, but also when it comes to analysing previous fights, for example. He is also biased against lesser known fighters and sucks up too much to the big stars. Important and unwarranted. 4. Bunce likes getting on bandwagons with fighters. When they are winning and going places, he praises them to the heavens but when they are getting "exposed" or when they lose, he stabs them in the back in a low way. Important and unwarranted. Overall he does more good than harm, because he gets casual fans excited about boxing. However, once you scratch under the surface, you realise that with all that good comes some bad stuff that is unwarranted and cannot be easily explained away, forgotten or forgiven, bad stuff which is not inevitable or involuntary either. The kind of good is very good, but the kind of bad is very bad too...especially since he is aware of what he is doing, when it comes to both good and bad. A very enthousiastic but rather shady character, Bunce. Great for the casual fan, but not so great for the hard-core fan who cares about the future of "the sport" and is interested in what is best for boxing - the sport, rather than boxing - the dirty, corrupt business.
One thing Buncey was totally wrong on after the Hopkins-Pavlik fight. He said when brief highlights were being shown after the fight was aired live "Look at Hopkins here, he's never fought this way in his life" when he referred to Hopkins opening up and being aggressive 'briefly'. Anyone who knows Hopkins' career will see that he's not always been a negative and cautious fighter. Many times during fights he's been aggressive. Late rounds against Trinidad, Echols, Tarver, Joppy, etc.
great points..and very well made fella... i hadnt thought about some of those things like that...but i'm definetly hearing you... so far the only thing i have disagreed with that bunce has brought up on the show is his support of the prizefighter series...i am totally against the whole idea of that show... apart from that i've had no real reason to scrutenise what he says...but you say overall he does more good than harm, so that'll do for me... again..good post :good
