It's a myth that defensive fighters have no offense. This isn't football. Defense doesn't win fights. Judges need to see enough counters and effective offense to give a defensive fighter a round.

Why didn't Donaire walk through Rigo? Cause Rigo would put the hurt on him when he tried. Rigo stood his ground whenever Donaire landed anything. Donaire landed one, Rigo responded immediately.

For the most part this is true of Mayweather. The only fight I saw Mayweather move a lot and arguably 'run' was Baldomir. That guy had a serious chin back then.

Sweat Pea was as nasty as they come.

From what I've seen, Floyd and Ward are very much respected on just the basis of their skills in the eyes of boxing fans in general. The disrespect for Floyd comes from his persona, lack of ambition to fight the best fighters, and his lack of ambition to entertain in fights by pressing more for stoppages. The considerably smaller patches of disrespect for Ward stems from his lack of punching power, a small faction of people that don't like his "Son of God" moniker, tendency to fight a lot in Oakland, and the small elements of "dirty" fighting in his game.
