Tyson never went hungry. his real mother was a nurse not a hooker or a drunk, he was raised in cus d'amatos fancy house from age 11 with the best money could buy. he was a wild kid from what age 9 to age 11?

Why does he say his mother was a drunk if she wasn't ?

Tyson's mom was a drunk and a drug user. She definitely wasnt an upstanding citizen. He lived in the Bedford Stuy area of Brooklyn NY, which was considered the largest ghetto in the US at one point during the crack epidemic of the 80's.

Mike definitely didn't have a good upbringing, but there were fighters in the past who had it tougher, Mike made bad choices and made his whole situation much worse than it really needed to be.

Other fighters like Riddick Bowe, Zab Judah, Shannon Briggs, all came from the same area, but they had parents who were active in their lives. When you grow up surrounded by drug users and thugs, thats what you know. I cant really blame Tyson in his early childhood for being the way he was, but as a grown man, he had enough time to learn right from wrong, and he didnt, because of the people he continued to surround himself with. One thing consistent in Tyson's life is that he has always needed someone to follow and emulate, and that has definitely created the ups and downs in his life.
You talk to guys like Steve Lott and Tom Patti and they know a completely different side to Tyson than the Crocodile and Daryl Baum thugs that Tyson ran with towards the end of his career.

I have no doubt that Mike has a very good heart and is a very kind person deep down, but like you said, he surrounded himself with terrible people, even as a grown man.

At the same time though, even when Cus was watching him, Mike would sneak out and be missing for days at a time because he'd go back into New York be up to all sorts of trouble and partying.

By the early 90s he was entirely out of control again and his habit continued into the 2000s. The past year or so is pretty much the only time we've seen Mike completely out of trouble. As recent as 3-4 years ago he was still getting into trouble.

I’m sure I read that mrs Tyson was a good woman but struggled coping with the hopelessness of Bedford stuy. As far as I know she was a still a qualified professional but being a single parent and watching the neighbourhood decline obviously ground her down. I never heard she wasn’t an upstanding citizen. Often good people get caught up in a bad situation and things never work out for them.

Being born into a bad situation is a disadvantage in life but Tysons mother was said to be a good woman so its not like the kid had entirely no chance of a stable future.

Just because your a qualified profession doesnt mean you cant be a drug user and a bad parent. Obviously she didnt do something right because Tyson grew up on the streets and not in a type of stable household. Those are facts.

    True.

Maybe, maybe not. sometimes the streets get a hold of the kid and even the best of parents cant do anything about it when that is what their kid wants to be. sometimes the kid himself chooses to allow that to happen. Sure both sides have to take responsibility but often a single parent is outnumbered. I would suggest a nurse is a stable caring person in most cases.

Even today, if it had been my grandmother, I would find him and crack his head open with a bat.

I knew a guy whose stepdad beat his mother when he was little....years later he saw the guy in a parking lot and knocked him to the ground and smashed both of his hands.

It was his father who made the household unstable. He frequently beat his mother. One day when he did it the mother threw boiling water on him and Mike along with his 2 siblings helped the mother beat the father for a change.
