Could someone explain to me why John Conteh got his title stripped?

He was too cool for the WBC to stand him. That man was a superstar.

I believe he refused to fight Miguel Cuello.

Conteh walked out on his defence against Cuello just 3 days before the fight. Jesse Burnett was rushed in to take his place, fighting Cuello for the vacant title.

Any reason for not wanting to fight him?

I think he wanted bigger fights, for some reason GalĂndez springs to mind.

Here is an excerpt from a Q & A with Conteh

"DH: Two months later a title defense against Miguel Cuello in Monte Carlo was suddenly aborted three days beforehand, which cost you your WBC title. I heard you had complained that you were forced into this fight practically at gunpoint. What were the details?

JC: This fight was being televised internationally. Everyone was making money on it but none of it was coming my way. There were a lot of angry people over this, but I had to stand me ground."

God Bless him, sounds like a Larry Holmes move, only his was more reasonable.
