I just finished watching Alex Arguello's legendary first fight with Aaron Pryor. What a fight, give and take from an opening round very comparable to the opener of Hagler/Hearns.

I have always made note of how straight and beautiful Arguello's technique is when he unleashes his uppercut and straight right hand. Did any fighter in history throw straighter punches than Alexis Arguello? Carlos Zarate comes to mind. Who else?

Yes, he was almost flawless, quote by Peter King:

Arguello was poety in motion. Some of those right hands that landed on Pryor were unbelievable. They couldn't have been delivered with more power or been any straighter, but somehow Pryor took them. I still think Aaron was wobbled at least two or three times in the fight, but never anywhere close to being seriously hurt. I have never seen anyone throws punches with better technique and more accuracy than Alexis Arguello.

When a fighter is hyped up by illegal stimulants it gives him an ability to absorb punches that he otherwise wouldn't be able to take.

I truly believe that panama lewis knew that pryor or no other jr. welter could take arguellos punches flush and survive, and for this reason he had something prepared for pryor to take. He knew that his fighter would get nailed, no question about it, and he needed an advantage.

The punches that alexis landed were out of this world and could be heard rows back, particularly the one in the 13th round and at the end of the round pryor was walking behind arguello like he wanted more. He had to be on something.

    Interesting.

I'm not convinced the result would have been any different irrespective of the "mysterious black bottle", but you do raise some interesting points.

People will always remember the straight right hand that snapped Pryor's head back in round 13, but Alexis was guilty of landing 3-4 flush right hands in the round before that, also.

Pryor visibly wobbled a few times in the later rounds, and I'm convinced, had that been any other 140lb fighter in history taking those shots, it would have been over. I even question Chavez walking through them shots. They were brutal.

arguello made landing his right hand the way he did , look easy, and it isn't.
his left hook was no powder puff either.
how many champs did he fight by the way ?

i think his left uppercut followed by his right hand was more lethal than his left hook followed by right hand.

i'm quite a tall boxer for my weight so i have watched alot of him and his uppercuts and straight punches ares ome of the best i have ever seen and he knew exactly how to use his size no matte what he was doing attacking or defending

Arguello is, in my opinion, one of the very best punchers in history, perhaps even THE best. His combination of power, technique, and variety (beautiful puncher to body and head) was sheer beauty.

Alexis would have beaten almost any other lightwelter in history the night he fought Pryor, he was unlucky to be facing a natural lww with an ATG chin.

:good I've always said the same thing.

I don't envision any other 140lb fighter, with the possible exception of Chavez, walking through those right hands.

Alexis would surely be crowned a 4 divisional champion if it was our current champion he had to face. Ricky is a good fighter, but he is a sucker for the counter hook. Alexis utilized that really effectively.

Everyone who knows me know what I think of Arguello.

To the above poster, Hatton's bullish strength and Alexis's position at 140 would make it a closer fight, but, for the most part, Hatton is exactly the kind of fighter Arguello LIKED to fight. He would have his moments, but whilst he was having them, he would be set-up....Arguello K.O 11.

And, even as a huge Arguello fan, I agree with Alexis himself 'Pryor didn't need that black bottle to beat me'.

To prove it, Pryor dismantled him even quicker in the 2nd fight, which, IMO, is a very underrated fight. Sure, the 1st fight had taken it's effect on Arguello, but the 2nd fight is still very competitive and exciting.

Arguello was never goning to be the same after the first Pryor bout so I don't put too much stock into the 2nd Pryor bout.
Anybody ever see Arguello flatten Kevin Rooney with a single righthand?Beautiful punch.

Yeah, funnily enough that is after the 1st Pryor fight. So he clearly had something left.

Actually, at least according to boxrec, the Rooney fight was just before the first Pryor bout. That aside, I think it's interesting that both guys fought twice in between their first and second bouts. It's certainly something a lot of people tend to forget.

But it was a wide looping left hook which did in Escalera. Other great fighters which threw straight punches are, Wilfredo Gomez, Salvador Sanchez, Julio C. Chavez, Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Robinson. All threw effective straight punches, with great results.
