Froch - I'm still holding on to that dream.

 

froch wins the tourney said it from day one saying it now:yep

 

I wanted Froch to win after that incredible fight with taylor. However, was given advice from a supposedly reliable source that it would be a abraham/Kessler final. the words only lost to Calzaghe in 40 something fights sounded good to the younger naive me.

 

I remember being confident before Kessler bout that Ward would win. Felt more and more as the fight got closer that he had the ability to do it.

Was never sure of Dirrell and thought he looked sort to fold under severe pressure.

I didn't think AA would do as poorly as he has and Kessler beating Froch wasn't what i expected. Thought Froch would of done it.

Couldn't put a finger on a winner not in a tournament like this....

 

Kessler for me. I thought both Dirrell and Ward would be far too inexperienced and would get their arses handed to them along the way. Abe for me was always one demential and, while he can bang, had never thought at 168. This made me think he would be just too small to have such an impact and that the bigger guys would keep him at bay with a long jab. Taylor had just been KO'ed by Froch so didn't give him a sniff. And I actually thought Froch was pretty bad and wouldn't make it through the first stage. Never been more happy to be wrong, and he has quickly become my favourite British boxer.

Obviously those picks don't account for the pullouts and what we've actually learned about each of them during the event.

It's a shame that it's not quite panned out as we'd have liked, but there's still been some very good fights made and there's plenty more to come both in this tournament and afterwards.

 

I thought Froch or Taylor. Had a feeling the tournament would rejuvenate Taylor, obviously not. Didnt know much about Ward or Direll so guessed one would turn out good and the other would wilt, thought Abraham wouldnt settle at the weight and thought Kessler would slow throught the tournament.

So my overall guess of the tournament turned out halfy half. Not to bad considering it has been pretty mental with pull outs etc

 

How did the Group Stage work? I've been watching videos and looking at the fixture list but it seems to be a really weird format.

 

They were meant to have three bouts each with the winner recieving 2 points and an extra point for a KO. The top four qualifying for the semis - 1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd. It sort of happened that way but subs were used for Kessler and Taylor pullouts (Green and Johnson) and Ward only had two bouts with the third being a non super six bout with Sakio Bika (due to Direll pullout)

 

So did they choose the three fights at random? Main problem is that it had 6 fighters instead of 8 from the start in a knock-out competition. The group stage doesn't work especially if the world champion loses to someone who gets eliminated.

 

The whole super 6 format was set up for American Ward to win, he is the only fighter who has fought all his fights in his home country, all the rest of top fighters have had difficult matches abroad and lost, Kesler in the states, Froch in Denmark, Dirrell in the Uk and Taylor in Germany, it is harder to win on your opponenents soil in these type of contest's. four of the contestants have been from the USA. I hope Froch does it, but I have a feeling in the states Ward will out point him, they should have called it the Ward Super Six.
