Always been a fan of the sport but only recently started following intently. Tired of seeing all these big fights get put off. How was the Super 6 WBC able to happen? Why can't there be "mini tournaments" throughout the year to force some action in all/some weightclasses? Forget the Super 6 just do a tournament of 4 with no 3rd place. A commitment to 1, or possibly two fights, plus one or two voluntary/mandatory fights outside the "tournament". Easier to market and get excited about. Imagine a welterweight tournament with Brook, Vargas, Broner, Thurman (assuming he wins) for example. Wouldn't it be more exciting to follow than the soap opera that is boxing??? Why isn't this able to happen?
Because none of the fighters in the Super 6 were stand alone superstars. Ego and money effect every other division but SMW at the time because everyone was equal. Wish it could always be that way but fans need a face. Every sport has a face.
Well, the S6WBC kind of was anomalous. When it happened it was a huge deal in the sport, and for a time eclipsed the goings on at both heavyweight and welterweight (traditionally boxing's glamor divisions). Something like that coming together has never been the norm, before or since. Of course, it didn't pan out perfectly (injuries, replacements, etc) but it was still a pretty monolithic development in hindsight and it's been a shame we haven't seen more tourneys patterns in that mold. It requires promoters & managers to be willing to make large gambles with their marquee assets, though. You don't see that everyday.
It was Showtimes event and now they should do the same with 154 division because it needs a boost too. The Haymon Boxing squad is ripe with Jr. MW wanting to prove themselves and they will never be great if they don't start fighting each other. All that Mayweather /Haymon stuff worked for Mayweather and Haymon , not everyone can pull that off. I hope they all don't think that they are him?:think
There was a documentary (might have been a Fight Camp 360 but I can't find the episode) with a lot of interviews with the promoters. I seem to remember Goosen doing really well in the negotiations I think Haymon could possibly do it at WW as well but maybe his fighters think they have too big a name already.
