To be fair bailey, the division was never that strong anyway. I mean, you could probably make a good argument for Hearns being in the top 20 ever in it.

Of course I am. The SMW division has some great match ups to be made, but it isnt as talent deep. Many idiots come on here and say the HW division isnt strong, when its actually very good, just some of the fighters arent as known to the American audience (this is another arguement and different thread, not for here and just an example). Now in The SMW division, you have recognised names who arent as good as previous years but better known. Thats all

So when was the division at its best so if you claim its the weakest now? I wouldn't say the division has the best fighters, but its definetley the most competitive and its exciting to see whos gonna be number 1 in a year and a half. It is the most exciting the 168lb division has ever been. During Calzaghe's reign he was that good that he was universally recognised as been number 1 despite the others ranked near the top. He had Lacy and Kessler challenging him,he beat them both. Ottke was the 1 that got away. Calzaghe would of annihilated Ottke, even in Germany!

It has been very strong, even with its short life. Just because there arent many names due to its youth dosent mean its not and hasnt been strong.
When the division first started you had Leonard and Hearns, who wouldnt live with many of the bigger natural SMWs but made a mark. Thats similar to today

I havent said I know. What I did write was that Ward only has 1 top name on his record, an already beaten exposed fighter who was unwell and suffering double vision, and has only fought leftovers, which isnt going to change in his next bout

It hasnt been that good, there's a handful of fighters there who wern't even that good anyway. Once you get past Calzaghe, Jones, Ottke, Beyer, Park, Collins, Benn, Eubank and Toney(a lot of those wern't even that good, or spent little time at 168), you're left with Mitchell, Lacy, Baek, Woodhall etc.

    The tournament created the hype.
They may well be talented, and against each other may even appear even more so, but are you saying that these fighters are more talented than Ottke? Ottke was also a fantastic amateur turned pro very late, when considered past his best, and won a world title in his 13th fight, and made 21 successful defences. Sure you can go on about decisions, which isnt the point and another arguement, but the point is guys like Dirrell dosent have any great SMW resume and his big SMW victory is a DQ against a former MW with no major SMW resume, where he finished out cold. That is the case, and dosent compare to anything Ottke has achieved, for example

I cant comment on Baek as I only know what ive read. But -

Mitchell - was a 2 time WBA champ, beat future world champ Siaca, KOd long reigning champ Liles who was #1, drew with 2 weight champ Girard and looked unlucky in a return and looked unlucky to many against one of the best SMWs ever in Ottke. Thats not a bad run.

Lacy - Tell me which active American SMW has a better overall resume than Lacy? His resume is arguably as good as Butes.

Woodhall - Beat WBC champ Thobela, future SMW champ Catley, former champ Nardiello who was still world rated, and Branco who went on to become WBA LHW champ and beat fighters like now S6 finalist (point proven) G Johnson and was a good enough challenger recently to LHW champ Pascal.

That already shows a strong list you mentioned there, and I can think of several others

the tournament created MORE hype, but there were always discussions of what would happen if they face each other.

and how could you conclude their resumes already when most of them have just started picking up competition?

The have losses on their records because they're actually fighting eachother. You want them to all avoid eachother and keep their 0s? Would that make it a strong division?

JC you been here for a minute. Dont waste your time mate. 68 is looking great right now. And certainly is more competitive than when your poster boy was number 1.
