I put alot of weight behind many of the fighters from a few years back in the SMW division, ie Mitchell, Woodhall, Lacy etc

But even though its not thread related, why do you say Ottke hid in Germany? He was champ (except when he won his title) and didnt have to travel and was making more money fighting at home. In that arguement look at how the S6 fighters have travelled except for Ward who has hid in Oakland, where he can headbutt, hold and hit and get away with infrindgements.
Ottke may have had a decision or 2 that was shady. The Reid victory (when Ottke was well past his best) springs to mind, but it isnt like people who havent ever watched Ottke make out. The fact is he is a SMW that won the WBA & IBF titles and made 21 title defences and beat alot of very good world rated SMWs, in a tougher division than today

Please note the bits that are uninformed :huh, I think you will find that the post is very informed, so much so that it has taken the ignorant by surprise, obviously you are on that list :rofl

I don't really understand how Froch can make anyone look like an amateur. He might knock someone out, but make him look good until then. :rofl

Have you ever seen the guys mentioned in that post fight ? I imagine you haven't...;)

Yes Froch would most likely knock most of those guys out !:deal

Name a name on Dirrell's resume before the tournament.
Ward still only has one noteworthy win.

So saying they would have dominated past year's crop of fighters is SPECULATION!

You guys just keep going around the main issue all the time !!!

Mike Tyson hadn't proven anything before he beat Trevor Berbick... Did that make Berbick the better fighter because he was more proven ? NO it didn't !!! Everyone knew Mike would beat his ass !!

Same applies with Dirrell, Ward & Bute which are much more skilled than the guys mentioned for the most part and their accomplishments or not....don't erase that !!!

Of course, fights still need to be made to confirm results cause it only counts in the ring, not by speculating !

Do you have any idea how many skilled guys disappear, never beating anyone of note?
Allan Green is skilled. Would he beat all those guys too?

Why are you bringing up Allan Green when I never even mentioned him ?

Upsets happen all the time and it's obviously not always the better teams or players that always win. History has proven it over and over again.

But.... if you ask me who the better bunch of guys are, I will always base it mostly on the talent at hand.

Saying today's 168lbs fighters are overall better takes nothing away from the other guys from the past and what they did. It just means that if you match them together, the odds would be in favor of today's bunch.

Of course it's speculation. This whole conversation is speculation. You can't compare two generations of fighters without subjectivity! That's why you have to take in consideration more than just achievement, especially when you compare someone's whole career with another's career not yet finished.

Apparently your main concern is losses.

Who will knock out whom in the Abraham vs. Froch fight? Who will beat the seemingly invincible Andre Ward? These question makes the devision one of the most interesting ones.

Really I have to disagree with this thread ..Its much stronger than when Calzaghe ruled with :

    Abraham

    Ward

    Dirrell

    Kessler

    Bute

and Froch ..What more can you ask for :huh

The problem is many of today's boxing 'fans' have this stupid idea that 1 or 2 defeat and the guy is "shot" or a "left over".

You guys should look up the history of boxing before Mike Tyson.
