how can this be deemed a failure? seriously. we have seen two of the top 168'ers in froch and kkessler fight each other. we have also seen the emergence of 2 american stars who now have marquee names on their resume. the tourney has been a success, and has made 168 one of the best and most interesting divisions out there. in bute, froch, ward, dirrell you hve 4 men who all are within touching distance of being the king of the division. and this considers the worst case scenario being that the tourney gets cancelled now.
The concept and 5 fighters are still there. Dirrell and Ward have both proven their worth - and Abraham and Froch confirming their status. Green may be a decent contender - but his lone performance in the tournement revealed that the difference between royalty and mob. He wont be missed if the tournement goes in to the semifinales without him.
But what if Dirrell also pull out of the tournament! like rumors said he would do if Ward got his third fight in oakland! Would that mean Ward vs Green II..:huh I sure hell hope not!
It's just too long a tournament. It would have been much better to make it an 8 man tournament, starting immediately with quarter finals. You first have the top 4 rated guys at 168lbs facing the next 4 in line that are willing to be part of it. Then the winners of those fights face off right away in semis...and the final is the third and last round ! That would have been the best possible scenario !! We still were witness to great fights though, and props to SHOWTIME for making it happen !!!
Super 6 was a great idea, but it was doomed to fail due to the brutality that is boxing. It would have been better to just match all of those guys up with great contracts and let it be. Nobody really cares about the tournament format. These are just GOOD FIGHTS. Showtime gets respect.
