While credit has to be given to the participants of the super six for agreeing to the tournament which is full of great fighters I can't help but think whoever is handling bute has done a fantastic job. He is a big name in Canada and can fight and remain champion whilst looking impressive during the super six and then just go and fight the winner. Coupled with that is the fact that his money will be better than that of the contestants in the tournament when he is fighting lesser names. In just two fights he has demolished andrade and miranda and can just watch the super six unfold.
So, in summary, staying at home fighting borderline top ten/top twenty fighters > fighting the best in your division home or away?
Bute has fought to fighters who don't have anywhere near the skill level of Ward and Dirrell or the World Class Punch Power of a Abraham or the Unbeaten Never Say Die Warrior Heart Awkward Style of Froch or the Accomplished and Well Schooled Kessler or the Raw Punch Power of a Green. Yes his last few wins are impressive but fact is he's fighting guys that suit him and guys who have been beaten and know what it is to lose. The Super Six line up is a different kettle a fish.
Bika is no chump, neither are andrade or miranda. My point was he gets better money for easier fights then he has the winner of the super six to fight just to clear up who's the best at the weight. Very well managed, and from the fights that have happened so far it seems ward would be the toughest for him.
Wasn't Bute's name on the board on one of the first Showtime 360 episodes? Surely he would have wanted to be in the tournament? Love to know what happened.
i think hershman didn't invite him actually. But end of the day he had his chance to fight Froch beforehand.
IIRC BUte already had the Andrade rematch lined up and that was signed to HBO before the super six was signed up.
That's what I read. Bute and his people wished to accommodate Andrade in a rematch, thereby spoiling their chances of being involved in the Super Six opening stages. I suppose they still could have jumped on board after Taylor withdrew.
Just reading a article and it says Hershman wanted 3 Europeans and 3 Americans in the format. Bute said he's happy he not involved. His people want him to become like Ricky Hatton was here selling out 20,000 seater staduims +.
I don't think there's anything impressive about avoiding the best fighters in your division and beating up fringe contenders whilst the best go at it.
It might be great money and easier opponents but we're not his accountants so that isn't going to matter to fans or historians. Easy opponents are good for the body and the bank balance but it won't be too favourable legacy-wise. In my eyes if the winner of this thing comes out undefeated and narrowly loses to Bute they'd still have more kudos. They were in a tournament fighting the best fight after fight, against all styles. That's kinda the point. What's to say that if Ward wins this thing beating Froch in the final, and Bute beats Ward, that Bute might not have had more trouble with the heavy handed pressure of Froch?
Exactly. He's gonna stay fresh making defences against guys who only have one trick or a style that suits him to a tee. Yes the finishes in his last two fights are very impressive but at the same time these guys he's fighting aren't the cream of the 168lb division and if he does beat the Super Six winner he will always have the advantage of being fresher where as every fight in Super Six is career defining and a dangerous fight right to the last bell.
In fairness, no-one good is going to be lining up to join a competition where you have two fights to get more points than five other people who each have three fights...
Hear hear, Bute seems to be doing what Khan is trying at 140lbs - allow the best to diminish each other first and then pick at the leftovers. Real greatness is measured by the overall quality of oppositin in a career, not a single inspired performance agains an opponet who's stylistically suied to you.
