It's a very interesting debate actually, and i'm not really sure where i stand on it. If Bute declined the invite into the super six, then he's taken a calculated risk on staying fresh and defending his belt in Canada in front of 20,000 + fans, while awaiting the winner of the tournament.

On the other hand, will he always be remembered as the fighter who did'nt participate and therefore didnt take on the best on a regular basis, like the others? I suppose that argument will always be thrown at him.

Only time will tell. I like Bute as a fighter, it's a shame from a fans point of view that he's not in there mixing it with the others.

It's not really an avoidance issue, he beat bika who is rated above some of the super six guys. The main problem will be who he fights from now till the end of the super six, obviously catch weight bouts with a couple of light heavyweights are the most prestigious options with brinkley and bika being mooted as opponents at super middle. For my money if he beats the super six winner you couldn't call him anything else but the best in the division.

If Bute beats the winner of the super 6 it doesnt prove hes the best a 168. Just think of the resume of the winner of the super 6. Bute should be in the Tourney. He has to beat Froch , Ward , AA , Kesssler and Dirrel. At least a few of them

If he does wind up with Brinkley/Bika he should bin the title and fight who he wants to fight next.

I'd leave Hopkins alone... most of the better LHW's are already fixed for the middle/end of this year, Cloud may be available :think

I dont think anyone can criticise Bute for not being in this thing, but you cant praise him for this either. The fact is every fight in the super 6 is harder than anybody Bute has fought, not to mention with both home and away fights.

Somebody said earlier how Bute was bypassing the super 6, proving he is number 1 anyway which is complete nonsense.

He is a good fighter obviously, but this tournament came up at the wrong time for him. He was being milked as a hometown fighter, fighting ok but not top contenders, and coming off a controversial win that he in fairness, goes on to avenge. Plus, there are the contractual factors as well, he wasn;t particulalry suitable for the tourney but its not as if he bitched out of it.

But until its over, he is treading water for two years, because the winner of that thing is numero uno, period. And who Bute has to fight to gain that status.

he declined a fight with froch before the super six happened so it wouldnt surprise me if he turned down the tournament, he's a HBO hype job who will get found out very soon

He's only a hype job in the last two fights since he's been on HBO?

Who else at 168 would be better then the winner of Brinkley-Bika match that isn't in the super six. I think that is a good matchup personally I just hope he doesn't take on Bernard Hopkins. Marcus Johnson is coming along and he has been mooted as a potential opponent I have heard good things about him and is out soon.

I wonder if Pavlik will move up if he doesn't get rematch and fights Bute. Still a viable option and a interesting fight. Bute to win if it did happen.

Bute has been snapped up by HBO who are building him up in response to the Showtime super six my opinion he is good but how good? we dont really know. He needs to go in with somebody in the super 6 to truely gauge. As regards to getting the winner he probably will get the winner and if he wins or not will probably fight a few other super 6 fighters. He isnt thebest at 168 and cant claim to be whislt the super 6 is ongoing expect him to fight Allan Green if he drops out at semi finals or possibly Kessler

i feel thats a little harsh, afterall the manner of the ending of the 1st fight against andrade led a lot of people to believe that he was going to lose. that old boxing cliche of when someone ko's someone ala andrade bute he will ko him even faster the next time

bute deserves a degree of credit for taking that fight and whilst he cant be praised for being in the tourny surely he cant be criticsed either with the manner of his current performances.

thing is he may begin running out of viable opponents

does anybody know when the super 6 is meant to finish? late 2011?

Well last round of fights in the group stages will be finished summerish so he could conceivably be fighting one of the dropouts before the end of the year

Don't think that applies when they just get knocked down, but a bunch of people on t'internet claim it as a KO because they don't know the rules...

ahh come on now, the rules state that if a fighter isnt in a position to continue whether there be 1 second or 10 minutes left, its a ko which bute clearly wasnt able to do.he would of floored him with one punch had he been alowed to get at it. andrade got screwed imo

It may be harsh but it's true when you look at facts that he fought two guys recently who have been beaten by other champions in the division. He has looked impressive in the last two fights and understand he wanted to prove himself in Andrade rematch which i respect but it doesn't hide the fact that he's yet to beat the more elite of his division and fight the slicker members of the 168 society.
