I'm American and I scored it for Kovalev. Fair is fair.
I do think Ward will do better in rematch and I think Kovalev will not leave it to judges making a better fight than the first one.
Everyone saying Ward showed boxing skills is really making a mockery of boxing skills. I was more impressed with Kovalev's skills. What Ward showed was tremendous determination, grit and heart. Great conditioning and the mettle of a champion.
But wrestling, and getting Outlanded when you're supposed to be "the better boxer" is not incredible "boxing" Sergey showed a better Jab and far better mastery from the outside. Ward did take make adjustments and Sergey tired some making it closer in the second half but not enough for Ward to win.
The list of people that picked Sergey as the winner can't be ignored. Robert Byrd the referee. Michael Buffer the ring announcer. Roy Jones the future hall of fame boxer doing commentary. Harold Lederman hall of fame judge providing guest score. Larry Merchant hall of fame boxing reporter. Max Kellerman color analyst and boxing aficionado. Jim Lampley hall of fame announcer. Dan Rafael long time respected ESPN columnist. As well as 4 out of every 5 reporters in press row. And the majority of fans All who were there in attendance.
Add in names like Lomachenko and Tarver and a host of others and it's pretty hard to ignore that perhaps maybe if you have Ward winning- deep down - you want Ward to have won.
Watching the fight and scoring round by round I have it for Kovalev. And also just the general overall "feel" of the fight favors Kovalev. Ward wrestled and fought negatively for the majority of the bout. I don't think anyone watching that fight going into the 12th round was like wow Ward really putting on a beautiful boxing clinic tonight. Wow Ward has sublime moves and nuance tonight. Nobody saw that. Kovalev was the fighter that was dictating the narrative of the fight. 8-4, 7-5 Kovalev are far more widely reported scores than Ward.
Kovalev fought in his opponents home country, with his opponents getting to choose all 3 judges and the referee.
    Pretty clear home town call.

This rematch can't come soon enough!! Ward is hitting the deck again. But this time he's staying there.

I've posted my round by round score on here several times. If memory serves me I had it like this:

    Round 1. Kovalev
    Round 2. Kovalev (10-8)
    Round 3. Kovalev
    Round 4. Kovalev
    Round 5. Ward (close)
    Round 6. Kovalev
    Round 7. Ward
    Round 8. Ward
    Round 9. Ward (close)
    Round 10. Kovalev
    Round 11. Ward (close)
    Round 12. Kovalev (close)

    115-112 Kovalev.

By round 7 I felt Ward needed a ko or multiple knockdowns to win. He didn't come close to achieving that and once Kovalev won the 10th it was mathematically over on my card. I gave Ward almost every round I felt was close-5,9,11 with the exception of the 12th.

The issue is, they want to give all close round to ward, beside the ones above, also round 3 and 12. And not only that, it is argued now about round 1 and 10. What's next? 10-9 for round 2??

When every close round goes to one fighter that's called a hometown decision.
Round 1 and 10 were not close.
Round 3 wasn't really close. Ward came out trying to prove he wasn't hurt or intimidated and wrestled Kovalev early on and then pushed him into the ropes. That's not boxing. Kovalev landed a 3 punch combo followed by a heavy Jab that had Ward back in retreat. It was better than round 1 and 2 for Ward but he was still being dictated too by Kovalev.
12 was close. But so was 5,9, and 11.
11 Ward had 3 nice punches a hook to the body followed by a hook to the head which did nothing to Kovalev followed by a pretty jab maybe 20 seconds later. Kovalev controlled the remainder of the round. I gave it to Ward but it was barely.
Kovalev won 6 rounds clean and the kd. If you give Ward 5, 7,8,9,11,12,
He still loses. To give him more than that is absurd. Kovalev bossed the fight. Ward knew it look at his face when he was announced winner. Kovalev and the crowd knew it.
Seeing a fight live in person is different than arm chair quarterbacking from a TV set in a match like this. It's why almost everyone who was ringside - said Kovalev won. They could see the difference in his heavy hands and how his punches moved Ward around.
Kovalev isn't even stressing the result that's how confident he is that he won. He found it laughable.

Rjj, Leonard and Ali are 3 of the fastest guys around. Ward didn't posses the same speed to worry his opponents
