Ten yeara from now this thread will have ovet 100 pages and a new generation of virgins will debate to the death with one another over their virginity but play it off lije its this fights ending result.
What really bakes my noodle is how did they ensure the 2 best heavyweights, at the time, clash with a 2 week notice and they cant get the 2 best in any division now a days to fight each other for years or at all. I miss how they used to make match ups vs the BS that goes on now. Ring size, Refs, Judges, venue, Glove size/color, ring entrance, catch weight, promotion team portion, network....i'm sure a ton more.
Ali never re-matched Foreman. At 37 Lewis was entitled to retire if he felt he no longer had it and he would not have known that until AFTER the Vitali fight!
actually, ali did. out of all the fighters that gave ali trouble, he gave them all rematches. in two cases, they were three fights, norton and frazier. but, there was only one fighter that ali did not give a rematch to, and that was big george foreman.
It depends. If you okay a promise to re-match, trying to do something else ( Trying to make other matches Roy Jones, Kirk Johnson ), then opting out of the action altogether once an official re-match was ordered, sure Lennox Lewis did the right thing. I'd rather see a person keep his word, and add glory to the sport I sometimes get tired of defending. Ali beat Foreman rather easily. Vitali was up 4-2 on all three cards and had Lewis tired. If losing on a cut when you're winning an entertaining match for no less prize than the lineal heavyweight championship doesn't deserve a rematch, I don't know what in the sport does!
The difference is Vitali was prepping for a 10 round match vs. a no name. Lewis was preparing for a world class fighter. Advantage Lewis. I would also argue that Vitali was a bit pre-prime for Lewis when this match happened. After seeing most of his fights, I can tell you he became better post Lewis, and seemed to peak from a form perspective in his late 30's.
I would say much of that was thanks to Manny Steward. Klitschko's balance greatly improved with Manny and so did Lennox for that matter. I believe that Manny was that important to both of them. Whoever had Manny in their corner would usually win this fight.
Vits scared him so much that he thought oh I'm 38 now same age as ALL the other champions when they had been by then retired, so I better retire now.
And Vitali was preparing for Lewis for 2-3 years even though he had no chance or shot of ever fighting Lewis except on 2 weeks notice. Lewis is a sore loser and full of ****.
Fact, Lewis being way behind on the scorecards. Fact, a lucky cut via the glove tape. Fact, Lewis after the fight refusing to rematch Vitali like a coward
I doubt Ali ever shouted out in the Camera in front of the whole world, "I am not going to rematch and fight George Foreman". Lewis has said it on record "I am not going to fight Vitali again". A coward
