Ummm. Now, while I'm on Vitali's side in this particular dust up, you're really making a case for Lewis being a great boxer here. A boxer probably ought to be ruthless and target an opponent's weakness to win, if he wants to get anywhere, that is. Lewis hiding behind mummy's skirt after everybody and his dog agreed there should be a rematch, is waaaay more harmful to his reputation than being ruthless in the ring.
i would agree that worst ever lewis is ruthless by ripping out prime vitali's eye in less than half the fight distance. if anythings ruthless then that is, requring no rematch at all especially from a 38 year old man, since all the HW champs in history were retired by then and anyone saying different is claiming that they were ALL wrong.
I'm a fan of Vitali and rank him 19 or 20 all-time. I think he would have been a slight favourite to win the rematch, had there been one. That said, Lennox beat every man he ever faced, including a strong string of contenders and champions, and retired with the title, a rare feat in HW boxing. He wa getting old and he had done everything he wanted to do or needed for a solid legacy. His victory over Vitali was not controversial; the man's face looks like a well-used tampon and the stoppage was good. So he had every right to hang them up when he did. I rank him at #3 all time, right behind Ali and Louis.
There were other ways for Lewis to win rather than deliberately targetting a person's cut out of desperation and making him permanently blind
Yes like Vitali trying to kick him! Your comment illustrates just how little you grasp about pro boxing.
like cutting someones eyes with a punch when they arent up to defending themselves. yeh work it out baby. ummmm...
To close the argument. If the ref had let Vitali go out for round 7 he would have been blinded or violently KOd by a punch he couldnt see the ref stopped it to protect a fighter in danger if serious injury. A great stoppage by the ref as a Mclellan or Watson incident may have occurred with a 18st guy landing punches that the other fighter cannot see to move out the way of, defend or block TKO6
