Of course fighters get over-rated, thats the nature of being a boxing fan and even an analyst to a degree. The reason is that sport is all about speculation. Speculating and predicting what is going to happen in certain circumstances, before they've happened. You can't really rate a boxer until after his career is over, but where's the excitement in that. Determining how good a fighter is once their career is over is easy. The real challenge is when you see a fighter early-ish in their career and you pick them as a great. Everyone wants to be someone who sees the great fighter before it becomes obvious to everyone else. That's why fighters get over-rated. And I don't think there's anything that wrong with that.

Although I agree that people tend to overstate a fighters attributes immediately after a good win. And likewise overstate the rammifications of a loss. Like with the Margarito v Cotto fight, people are tending to overlook the fact that Cotto was beating Marg so easily in the first five rounds that it looked like a total mismatch. Cotto was beating him more severly than Marg was beating Cotto towards the end. The difference was chin. But I guess that just makes Margarito's win even better.

It depends in what sense you're making a reference like that. Both Hagler and Margarito are Black Sheep type figures who were kept outside the limelight because nobody wanted to give them a shot. Both had late career break throughs, ect. It's a very fitting comparison depending on how you frame it. Why, what is your objection?

In the hypothetical "Pac v Vasquez at LW" thread that is floating about, virtually the only guy picking Vasquez says he is doing so because Vasquez is his favourite fighter and he would back him against the US army.

That is his opinion, but its also freely admitting that subjectivity is being thrown out the window (I have to suspect a bit of tongue-in-cheek as well).

However, that is what we are dealing with to a large extent. A lot of posters have fighters they love and hate, and will over-rate and under-rate accordingly.

Its not a one-sided over-rating aspect on this forum, but a mixture of both.

I agree, its particularly bad straight after a fight. The knee-jerking is just unbearable.

Thats what esb does... It turned regular pac fans into *******s while margarito fans into to margaretards after the cotto fight. If cotto had won we would have seen new born cotards in this board too! :deal

The people who Overrate, are not as bad as those who pick apart a fighter
    based on

(The Poster's) bad decision's and so called expert opinion's.

For instance I pick Clottey to beat Judah on Sat.
Simply based on JC's ability to take vs. Judah's. (Resistance)

Should Judah win, he won't be the new "Tata" (For my Floyd fan's)
Either he executed a gameplan, or he can take more than I thought.

The end. (Or should I start bashing Clottey?)
No. I will give Super Judah his prop's.

This is very true. If PBF was defeated you would have hundreds of first time posters(or less than 25 posts) claiming "Look! i've told you for years that he was an overrated bum!" . Also, people often get behind their own fantasies. If a posters fav fighter is doing well, he is amplified to ATG status. If a posters fav fighter is doing poorly, they were robbed. People bend reality to their own wishes and fantasies about their favorite fighters. Cotto has a good chin, but if you are a fan of his, it is "uncheckable". As opposed to being an unbiased observer who would tell you that he has a good chin but has been shaken before by other fighters. People will discredit the achievments made against their fighter and approve other posters overexaggerations in their fighters favor made by other posters.
Thats why i like reading the classic boxing posts. People's opinions are not based on "oh i cant wait to see my favorite fighter again" and based more on the facts and what actually happened and what accomplishments were actually made.

Exactly. Look at all the boxing journalists who hyped Michael Grant as the "heavyweight champion in waiting," despite his lack of amateur background and solid pro accomplishments. And that's just ONE example among hundreds. Ibeabuchi is STILL grossly overrated despite having only two fights against live bodies! :patsch

It's just bandwagons, just like in any sport. In baseball the Tampa Bay Rays were being blown up, but as soon as they lost their 7 straight games it died down some. The same thing will happen to NY Giants if they don't have a winning season next year. After NY winning the super bowl they all of the sudden "the Patriots were exposed". This will never ever end.
