Commentators are using it now to just refer to fighters who have a ripped physique or look in shape. The actual meaning of the term is defined by genetically inherited characteristics. These characteristics have to be displayed in other sports and mean the boxer could have made it in a number of other sports as he possesses true athletic ability
I agree 100% with what you say. RJJ is the most athletic boxer in history. Dude could do things that the human body had no right to do.
A boxer can have great timing and reflexes but low amount of twitch muscle fibers. Just compare James Toney and Floyd Mayweather. Floyd have it all. Toney lacks in twitch muscle fibers.
I also thinks that people mix up body types with atletchic or unatheltic. http://www.thefitindian.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Workouts-Diet-Plans-for-Ectomorph-Mesomorph-and-Endomorph-Body-Types.jpg Tyson Fury's more of a endomorph while Joshua or Klitschko are more of mestomorph. Wilder's ectomorph. But as athletics goes in terms of overall strength, speed and stamina, I think Fury beats them all. Don't let the looks of them fool you.
I think stamina is often overlooked aspect though, some guys are able to stay fresh for all 12 rounds and perhaps even more (e.g. Floyd), is that not athleticism?
It definitely is. Secondary aspect. Not the first thing you think of associating with the word like speed or agility but important nonetheless and does fall under the umbrella.
Yeah, I guess that's fair enough. Though I still think Wilder's the most athletic HW, I think Wilder's the type of guy who could succeed in multiple sports just off of his athletic talent alone whereas Fury couldn't.
people care confusing an athletic look with being athletic, they overlap but aren't always the same thing.
Usually they use it on skinny guys. I guess it means "Look they are small and not that intimidating, but they are very athletic!!" -- like if they have speed or other skills that make up for their skinniness.
