Going into the Leonard fight there was a wrangle between the Hagler camp and the WBC The officials submitted by the WBC were Dave Moretti,LouFillipo,Harry Gibbs, and Richard Steele.Hagler's camp, the Petronelli brothers objected to Englishman Harry Gibbs onthr basis of the riot that broke out when Hagler had taken the ttile from Minter at Wembley. Gibbs did not officiate in that fight,in fact he was sitting next to me.The other reason for the objection was the supposed distaste for in fighting that English officials had. The Hagler camp demanded a Mexican official in Gibbs place and they got one. Jo Jo Guerra who gave Hagler just 2 rounds of the 12rounds. Gibbs flew home without seeing the fight, he watched it on TV 2 weeks later and scored it 8- 5-1 Hagler!
Erm… I think you'll find that Harry Greb had been dead for some time this stage. The OP is talking about Harry Gibbs.
Reg Gutteridge used to tell this story. Reg hated the inference that there was an English anti Hagler bias and, apparently, Pat and Goody were not particularly polite or diplomatic about Harry, one of the sports most experienced and respected officials, or the English in general. If I were a manager and I was told that Harry Gibbs was refereeing or judging a fight featuring my boy I'd be chuffed. Harry was one of the best judges and controllers of a fight I've ever seen and was scrupulously honest.
Yes he was,Harry was a fine ref and straight as die,I sat next to him a couple of times,he didn't know me from Adam, but was always happy to chat between rounds. Od Reg was the same ,their autobiographies are intereting reads.
I could be wrong but I honestly believe that Hagler and the Petronellis were still perturbed at the crowd reaction when Hagler stopped Minter to win the title. Perhaps they felt they couldn't a fair shake from the Brits due to that. It's quite simplistic but I don't see any other reason. Does anyone have any other insights or some kind of proof of anything by any chance?
So you mean Leonard didn't hold all the cards as most on this site want to believe...... Well imagine that.
I've got Reg's book and I met him a few times. Boxing man down to his toes, all five of them ! I think my Dad had Harry Gibbs' book but I don't know what happened to it. I 'd love to read it. Again, he was Boxing through and through.
That's probably the case Clinton but turning down Harry Gibbs was a mistake. If they'd really known the game they would have realised this.
To be fair, you can see why they would be hesitant about having their fight scored by someone who'd score a twelve-round fight that way.
